Valley City State hires assistant

Valley City State University head women’s basketball coach Jill DeVries announced today that Matt Karlgaard has been named the lead assistant coach for the Viking women.

Karlgaard replaces Lavesa Glover, who resigned in August after two seasons as an assistant at VCSU.

"We are thrilled to have Matt join the women’s basketball program at VCSU," DeVries said. "He shares our values and understands the culture that has been created within the program. He is passionate and enthusiastic about VCSU athletics and eager to work with the program."

Karlgaard is no stranger to VCSU, having worked on the men’s basketball coaching staff for the past seven seasons as a student assistant and assistant coach. As the women’s assistant coach, he will be directly involved in all facets of the program.

"I am excited for the opportunity here at VCSU," he said. "There is a rich tradition in this program that I want to help continue and build upon. I look forward to working with the team and Coach DeVries as we get started on what should be an exciting season."

DeVries says Karlgaard brings creative and innovative ideas to the program, along with a drive to recruit quality student-athletes.

"Matt has taken time to develop his own philosophy, and his beliefs about how the game should be taught and played fits the VCSU women’s basketball style," she said. "He is a student of the game and is a tireless recruiter of student-athletes that can find success on and off the basketball court."

Along with assuming the job of lead assistant for the women’s basketball program, Karlgaard has also been named the athletic department’s Digital Media Coordinator, which will include video production, live video broadcasts of VCSU home events, and content management for the video boards at Shelly Ellig Field and the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

A native of Litchville, N.D., Karlgaard is a 2010 graduate of VCSU with a bachelor’s degree in office management, and a minor in athletic coaching. He earned his master’s degree in recreation and sports sciences from Ohio University in June of 2012.
