Upstate Grad Pinson Joins Women’s Basketball Staff

USC Upstate women’s basketball coach Tammy George has announced the addition of Tobias Pinson to the women’s basketball coaching staff. Pinson, a 2015 Upstate graduate, returns to Spartanburg after spending the 2015-16 season as a graduate assistant at Walsh University. Pinson will assist with the Spartan post players as well as recruiting.

“I am excited to welcome Tobias to our staff at Upstate,” said George. “Being an alum, he has a love for the university. He is young and enthusiastic about being back at Upstate and I look forward to having his energy around the program.”

While at Walsh, Pinson helped coach the Cavaliers to a 20-9 season and a bid in the GLVC Tournament semifinals while working primarily with the post players. Pinson was also the head coach of the Cavaliers junior varsity women’s team.  Prior to his tenure at Walsh, Pinson was a volunteer assistant coach at nearby Converse College.

“I am excited and thankful to be joining Coach George’s staff and returning to my alma mater to coach,” said Pinson. “Coach George is one of the best coaches in the industry and I look forward to learning from her. She has been very successful in developing student-athletes on and off the court, and I look forward to adding to that tradition with my current knowledge and experience.”

Pinson began his collegiate playing career at Winthrop during the 2011-12 season before transferring to Spartanburg Methodist. In his lone season at SMC, Pinson appeared in 33 games while averaging 3.7 points per game as the Pioneers posted a 35-1 record and reaching the semifinal round of the NJCAA Division I national tournament. Pinson is a graduate of Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville.
