Trevor Woodruff, who compiled a 113-10 record and four conference championships over the last four years as head coach at the University of Scranton, has been named head women’s basketball coach at Bucknell by director of athletics and recreation Jermaine Truax. Woodruff brings 16 years of head coaching experience to a Bison program that is coming off league titles of its own in two of the last three seasons.
“I am thrilled to welcome Trevor Woodruff to the Bucknell Athletics family as our next head women’s basketball coach,” said Truax. “The Bison women’s basketball program is currently performing at a championship level, as evidenced by our two Patriot League titles in the last three years, so it was imperative for us to identify an individual with a similar pedigree of success. Trevor certainly fits that billing, with four league titles and four deep runs in the NCAA Division III Tournament during his four years at Scranton. Beyond the wins and losses, Trevor has proven to be an outstanding mentor to his student-athletes, and I am excited for him to jump right in, get to know our players, and work to build upon the excitement that our women’s basketball team has created on campus and in our community.”

Scranton was nearly unbeatable during Woodruff’s four seasons with the team. In addition to the outstanding overall record, the Royals went 53-6 in league play, including a 16-0 record in his first season, while winning four straight Landmark Conference titles. The Royals advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four this past season, adding to an Elite Eight appearance in 2016 and back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 2017 and 2018.
The Royals have a perennially successful program in the Landmark Conference, but the 2019 Final Four appearance was the team’s first since 2006. They finished fourth in both the D3hoops.com and WBCA Coaches Top 25 National Polls. Woodruff guided junior Makenzie Mason to Landmark Conference and National Jesuit Player of the Year accolades along with Second Team All-American honors from D3hoops.com. Senior Bridgette Mann went on to garner WBCA Honorable Mention All-American honors, and the Royals defense was outstanding the entire season, holding opponents to 48.8 points a game, the eighth-best mark in all of NCAA Division III.
Woodruff was twice named Landmark Conference Coach of the Year, earning the award for the first time while leading Scranton to a 30-1 record, including a 30-game winning streak, in his first season, and then again in his third season.
Prior to his time in Scranton, Woodruff spent 12 seasons as a head coach in collegiate men’s basketball, including 11 highly-successful seasons at Misericordia, his alma mater. He led the Cougars to Freedom Conference championships and NCAA Division III Tournament berths in 2012 and 2015, and he was named Freedom Conference Coach of the Year in both of those seasons. He was also named Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2008 in the Cougars’ previous affiliation.
Prior to his stint Misericordia, Woodruff was the head men’s basketball coach at Lackawanna College in Scranton in 2003-04. He led the Falcons to 24 wins and a No. 9 ranking in the final National Junior College Athletic Association Division II poll. The Falcons won the Region 19 and District 9 championships that season, and Woodruff was a named Coach of the Year in Region 19 and District 9.
In all, Woodruff has 296 career wins, seven conference titles, 10 appearances in national postseason tournaments, and eight Coach of the Year awards.
On a regional and national level, Woodruff has served as an NCAA Division III congressman, a role he currently holds and also held from 2005 to 2008. He was also a member of the men’s basketball regional ranking committee from 2012 to 2014.
Woodruff began his coaching career in 2001 as the head boys’ basketball coach at Delaware Valley High School in Milford, Pa.
A 1999 graduate of Misericordia, Woodruff holds his bachelor of arts degree in history. He completed his master’s degree in educational leadership at Wilkes University in 2004.
Woodruff takes over a Bucknell program that went 102-30 over the last four seasons, including a school-record 28-win season in 2018-19. This past winter, the Bison defeated American in the Patriot League Tournament championship game at Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell earned a best-ever No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament before falling 70-67 in a down-to-the-wire first-round contest in Charlotte, N.C.
Woodruff will be joined in Lewisburg by his wife Melissa and sons Bryce and Casey.
