Temple Promotes Way Veney to Associate Head Coach

After serving as an assistant women’s basketball coach for seven seasons at Temple, Way Veney has been promoted to Associate Head Coach, announced by head coach Tonya Cardoza.

“Way has earned this promotion and honestly, it’s long overdue,” noted Cardoza. “When I hired her seven years ago to be my top assistant, I knew she would work diligently to help propel our program. During her tenure she has served as the Recruiting Coordinator and is responsible for bringing talented players like Erica [Covile], Feyonda [Fitzgerald] and Alliya [Butts], to name a few. She works primarily with the guards and strives to make them the very best each year. Her passion for our program is evident in everything she has done to help us be successful.”

Veney, who also serves as the team’s recruiting coordinator, was instrumental in the success of the 2014-15 squad that earned the first postseason final four spot in program history. The Owls advanced to the WNIT Semifinals, relying heavily on its guards. Freshman guard Alliya Butts flourished under Veney, being named Big 5 Freshman of the Year, while also earning spots on the American All-Conference team, the American All-Rookie team, and the All-Big 5 team. Junior combo guard Erica Covile also received All-Big 5 and All-American Athletic Conference honors, while senior guard Tyonna Williams earned the American Sportsmanship Award, as well as one of six spots on the All-WNIT team.

“I’m very appreciative of the opportunity given to me by Coach Cardoza and the support she has given me over the past seven years,” said Veney. “Temple University is a very special place and I look forward to continuing the process of fulfilling the goals we have set for the program.”

After Veney’s arrival, the Owls earned three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, advancing to the Second Round in both 2010 and 2011, and took a top spot in the 2012 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), advancing to the third round.

Veney spent two years as an assistant at Providence College prior to joining the Temple staff. She instructed the guards and was responsible for the defense. She also was in charge of all recruiting.

Prior to her arrival at Providence, Veney spent three seasons (2002-05) at the College of William & Mary. She was responsible for recruiting as well as tutoring the Tribe guards. In addition, Veney assisted with scouting, practice planning, and day-to-day operations of the women’s basketball program.

Veney is a 2000 graduate of East Carolina University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. She was a two-year starter for the Pirates at the guard position and earned Second-Team All-CAA honors in each of her two seasons. She also was among the league leaders in scoring, assists, and steals. Veney earned CAA All-Tournament team honors in 2000 after leading the Pirates to the championship game of the CAA Tournament.

Veney began her collegiate playing career at the College of Charleston, where she led the Cougars in scoring during her sophomore campaign.

Upon completion of her college career, Veney participated in professional tryout camps for the WNBA’s Detroit Shock (2000) and the Los Angeles Sparks (2001).
