Sydney Johnson promoted to Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Chattanooga

Chattanooga Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Deandra Schirmer, announced the promotion of Graduate Assistant Coach, Sydney Johnson, to full-time Assistant Coach.

“Sydney has come into our program and made an immediate impact. She has displayed a dedication and work ethic that is very rare to find,” Schirmer said. “I know she is going to be so successful in this career with her strong relationship building skills and knowledge of the game. I couldn’t be happier to promote her into the Assistant Coach position. I know her impact will continue to grow and I am so grateful to have her as a continued member of our family.”

Johnson spent one year on Coach Schirmer’s staff as a Graduate Assistant after being hired last summer. She helped lead the Mocs to a 20-11 record and a SoCon Regular Season Championship.

Some of Johnson’s main roles as a Graduate Assistant were administrative tasks such as coordination of team meals, travel, and game day logistics. She also managed practice setup and assisted on the court during practice and individual workouts. Additionally, she helped organize team gear and set up recruit visits.

“I am very honored and grateful to be a part of such an amazing program and community like Chattanooga Women’s Basketball. I want to thank Coach Schirmer and the entire coaching staff for this opportunity, as well as, for being such amazing leaders and mentors to me in my time as a Graduate Assistant,” Johnson said. “I have so much love and appreciation for this team, and I am excited for the chance to continue upholding the strong legacy of this program”

Prior to coming to Chattanooga, Johnson had a successful five-year playing career at the Division I level. Playing her first four seasons at Boston University, Johnson was the first player in program history to earn multiple First Team All-Patriot League honors. She was also named to the All-Patriot League Defensive Team her senior year.

During her career at BU, Johnson scored 1,255 points, ranking 11th all-time in program history, and eighth all-time in career assists with 330. During her final year in Boston, Johnson led the Terriers to the Patriot League Regular Season Championship where they were 17-1 in league play.

For her fifth and final year of eligibility, the Powder Springs, Georgia native brought her talents back home to play for Georgia Tech. Playing for the Yellow Jackets in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Johnson appeared in 32 games with 11 coming as a starter in the 2023-2024 season. She totaled 73 points and 69 assists in her lone year at Tech on a team that was selected to play in the inaugural WBIT.

Johnson owns a Bachelor’s Degree in American and New England Studies from Boston University, where she graduated in 2023. She plans to continue her Master’s program at UTC, with an expected graduation date of Fall 2027.
