Stony Brook hires assistant

Stony Brook women’s basketball head coach Caroline McCombs has named Kelly Rotan to her staff as an assistant coach. Rotan comes to the Seawolves after spending a combined three seasons as an assistant coach at Air Force Academy and Yale University.

"I am excited to bring Kelly on board," McCombs said. "She comes to Stony Brook with fantastic credentials. She possesses a genuine dedication to providing student-athletes with a first-class experience on and off the court and is a tremendous fit for our program and athletics department at Stony Brook."

Rotan served as an assistant coach for Air Force Academy in 2013-14 and previously had a successful two-season tenure as assistant coach at Yale University, where her duties included helping to develop post players and all facets of game preparation. Rotan was a pivotal part of Yale’s ascent in the Ivy League, helping to guide the Bulldogs to a 16-10 overall mark in 2011-12, the most wins in a season since 1993-94.

She mentored two players who went on to complete at the international level while with the Bulldogs in Janna Graf and Megan Vasquez. Graf led Germany’s U-20 squad to a runner-up finish at the European Championships. Vasquez, who became Yale’s 17th 1,000-point scorer on Feb. 10, 2012, was a part of Puerto Rico’s attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.

Rotan coached two All-Ivy League First Team picks (Vasquez, 2011-12; Sarah Halejian, 2012-13), a Rookie of the Year (Halejian, 2011-12) and three All-Ivy League Honorable Mention selections (Michelle Cashen, 2011-12, Vasquez and Graf, 2012-13).

Rotan spent 2010-11 working as the marketing coordinator at Penn State, where she organized events, promotions and fundraising efforts for the basketball teams and Olympic sports.

A 2010 graduate of Juniata College in Pennsylvania, Rotan enjoyed a standout career for the Eagles. She led the squad to a Division III NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008 and back-to-back ECAC South Region Tournament berths in 2009 and `10. Rotan was named to the Landmark Conference’s All-Academic Team in 2010 and was a three-time Academic Honor Roll choice.

She holds with her bachelor’s degree in sport management from Juniata College and is a native of Atco, N.J.
