Stewart tabbed as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Colgate

Colgate head coach Bill Cleary welcomed this week the addition of Alex Stewart as his newest women’s basketball assistant coach.

Stewart has spent eight of her 12 coaching years in the Division I ranks, most recently at Georgia Southern from 2015-19. She also had coaching stops at Toledo and Jacksonville, in addition to brief tenures at Division II North Greenville and Division III Agnes Scott. Stewart was promoted to head coach at Agnes Scott for one season back in 2007-08.

The Norcross, Georgia, native followed that experience with three seasons at Georgia Tech, her alma mater. She served as the program’s director of basketball operations for two years and an academic coach for one.

“We are thrilled to welcome Alex to the Raider family,” Cleary said. “Alex has tremendous experience that will be extremely valuable as we look to build upon last season’s success.

“At all of her previous stops, Alex has had a knack for improving the program and making everyone around her better. We certainly look for her to continue that success here at Colgate.”

All-ACC Performer
During her time as a student-athlete, Stewart was named All-ACC Third Team as a junior. She excelled in assists and free-throws, finishing her collegiate career third all-time in the conference in both categories. One of her top games was a triple-double against Charleston Southern, finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists.

After her collegiate career, she played professional basketball in Iceland for one season, leading her squad to the Icelandic League championship and being named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

“I am extremely excited about joining the Colgate program and I’m looking forward to working alongside Coach Cleary and the rest of his staff,” Stewart said. “The women’s basketball team is on the verge of accomplishing something very special, and I’m honored to be able to be a part of this journey.”

Stewart during her career has managed multiple aspects of a Division I women’s basketball program, including practice planning, scouting, monitoring academic progress and travel coordination.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from Georgia Tech in 2004.
