Stawovy named Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Washington and Lee

Washington and Lee University Michael F. Walsh Director of Athletics, Jan Hathorn, and Head Women’s Basketball Coach Brittney Kemp have announced the hiring of Brittany Stawovy as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach.

“I am delighted to welcome Brittany to our program,” Kemp stated. “Brittany’s exemplary leadership and dedication to a culture of development, on and off the court, will make her an outstanding addition to our program and the W&L community. Brittany truly understands coaching and recruiting at a university that values the whole student.”

Stawovy arrives in Lexington following a two-year stint as the lead assistant coach for the Kenyon College women’s basketball program. She aided head coach Mary Corbett in all aspects of the program including prepping scouting reports, leading player-coach film sessions, handling travel operations and recruiting.

“I am incredibly excited to join Washington and Lee as the new assistant women’s basketball coach,” Stawovy commented. “I am deeply grateful to Coach Kemp and the entire athletic department for the opportunity to work with such a talented group of student-athletes. It’s an honor to be part of a program with a strong tradition of success, and I can’t wait to get started!”

Prior to her stop at Kenyon, Stawovy served as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s basketball team at Division II Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa., for two seasons, helping the Griffins to a 39-25 overall record and a 26-18 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Stawovy earned her Masters of Education Degree from SHU in May, 2023. While at Seton Hill, Stawovy gained additional coaching experience as the eighth grade head coach for Erudite AA Basketball and an assistant for the Western PA Bruins AAU basketball team.

Stawovy earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Secondary Education and English Literature, with minors in Special Education and Honors, from West Virginia Wesleyan College, and holds teaching certifications in two states. While there, Stawovy was a four-year member and two-year team captain for the women’s basketball team where she totaled 618 points, 301 rebounds, 174 assists and 75 steals as a 31.7-percent three-point shooter.

Kemp continued, “Brittany’s exceptional work ethic, unwavering passion, and clear commitment to the student-athlete experience elevated her to the top of an extremely impressive and competitive pool of applicants. The program is fortunate to have someone with such strong character and valuable experience helping lead this team. I can’t wait to see the immediate impact she’ll have on our culture, game, and players!”

Stawovy will begin her appointment on May 1 and will assist in all aspects of the program including recruting, player development on and off the court, game planning and operational support in addition to serving in the Physical Education department as a course instructor.
