Southern Arkansas Hires Assistant

Southern Arkansas head women’s basketball coach Rusty Rainbolt has announced the addition of Sherena Abercrumbia to the Lady Mulerider coaching staff as an assistant coach.

"I am very excited to have Coach Abercrumbia join our staff," noted Coach Rainbolt. "When I began looking for an assistant, there were a few main qualities I was focusing on. Specifically, we wanted someone family-oriented, with proven recruiting experience and a winner. Coach A fits all of those qualities and more. She will coordinate our recruiting efforts and work directly with our post players. We are very blessed to have her join the Mulerider Family."

Abercrumbia comes to SAU after completing a graduate assistantship with the women’s basketball program at Iowa Lakes Community College (Estherville, Iowa). While at Iowa Lakes, Abercrumbia was responsible for recruiting, player development, travel arrangements, academic advising, film exchange/breakdown, scouting reports, and student activities.

Prior to her appointment at Iowa Lakes, Abercrumbia began her collegiate playing career at Lon Morris Junior College (Jacksonville, Texas) where she earned first-team all-conference honors as a freshman in 2008-09. After her time at Lon Morris, Abercrumbia played her final two seasons of college basketball at NCAA Division I, Hampton University (Hampton, Va.).

In her two seasons at Hampton (2010-2012), Abercrumbia helped lead the Lady Pirates to regular season and tournament championships in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), advancing to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament each year.

A regular on the camp circuit, Abercrumbia has worked the University of Texas (Austin, Texas) camp each of the past two summers and recently worked the University of Dallas (Dallas, Texas) camp as well. While at these camps, Abercrumbia has assisted in providing basketball knowledge and skills to high school students in a fun and safe environment through drills and technique training.
