The Central Arkansas women’s basketball team has added Jewel Smalls to its coaching staff, head coach Tony Kemper announced. Smalls brings plenty of experience as a player development coach, and looks to add her skillset to the Sugar Bear program.
A standout player at the who split her college career at Western Carolina and Delaware, Smalls was a fierce competitor in her college career, racking up 1,261 points, 744 rebounds, 214 assists, 160 steals, and 267 three-pointers. She holds records at both schools she attended, logging the most double-doubles in a single season at Western Carolina (11), the second-most points by a Catamount freshman (330), as well as the most threes in a game at Delaware (8).
The 2019 SoCon Freshman of the Year, and a two-time All-SoCon guard, as well as a CAA Champion, Smalls brings a winner’s mentality to a program that has reached back-to-back ASUN Championship Finals.
“Jewel will be a strong addition to our staff. Her experiences as a player coupled with her collegiate and high school coaching stops give her a great starting point at the Division I level,” Coach Kemper said. “I believe that she is a really good personality fit in our program and that is important to us. We are excited to get to work together.”
Since her playing days, Smalls coached at Murray State College, wearing a bunch of different hats for an Aggies team that went 9-3 at home. Following her one season in Tishomingo, Smalls joined Pure Performance Basketball LLC, a player development organization that has worked with college and pro basketball players alike. This last season, she coached at McEachern High School in Springs Georgia, helping guide the development of three All-Region Players.
“I’m incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to join the Sugar Bear family! I’m thankful to coach Kemper for believing in me, and I’m proud to be part of the winning culture he’s built here,” Smalls said. “The UCA community has already been so welcoming, and I can’t wait to get to work and contribute to the program’s continued success.”
