Darrick Matthews has been named head women’s basketball coach at Southwestern Christian University.
Matthews previously served as a men’s basketball assistant and junior varsity coach at Southwestern Christian. Matthews also serves as a professor of sports management at SCU.
"We are excited to announce the hiring of Darrick Matthews as the next head coach for our women’s basketball program,” SCU athletic director Mark Arthur said. “Coach Matthews is a great mission fit for our university and has a strong work ethic. He has good knowledge of the game, is well organized and has an exceptional ability to pay attention to details. I look forward to watching him lead this fine group of young ladies."
Matthews becomes SCU’s second women’s basketball coach since joining the NAIA in 2010.
“I’m very excited and blessed for this job opportunity, but more importantly the direction the Lord has led me,” Matthews said. “Great things are happening here at SCU, and I’m proud to be able to partake in this special journey. I look forward to meeting with each of the players and building a competitive basketball program.”
Matthews spent the previous two seasons as an assistant under SCU men’s basketball coach Quinn Wooldridge. During that time Matthews helped the Eagles transition to the Sooner Athletic Conference and helped coach third-team all-SAC selection Tyler Turner and NAIA dunk contest winner Tyler Inman.
Prior to joining the Eagles, Matthews spent one season as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Sul Ross State (Texas). Matthews helped the Lobos double their wins from the previous season and helped coach the 2011-12 American Southwest Conference newcomer of the year Krista Ford. Matthews also served as a graduate assistant for the cross country team.
Matthews started his coaching career as an assistant boy’s basketball coach at Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas, where he helped the Cougars to a district-5A playoff run in 2010-11.
Matthews began his playing career at Oklahoma Christian in 2007 before transferring to the University of the Southwest (N.M.). During his sophomore season at USW, Matthews led the Mustangs with 19.4 points per game and earned first-team all-Red River Conference honors.
Matthews finished his career at McMurry (Texas) in 2009-10 where he helped the War Hawks to an ASC title. Matthews ranks 20th in total points (601), 21st in points per game (19.39) and 32nd in free-throw percentage (0.80) in NAIA Division I men’s basketball.
Matthews graduated magna cum laude from McMurry in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics education and minor in curriculum instruction. In 2012, Matthews graduated from Sul Ross State with a Master of Education degree with emphasis in physical education.
