Sara Holt Joins Lake Superior State University Women’s Basketball Coaching Staff

Lake Superior State University women’s basketball interim head coach Brandon Lokken recently announced the hiring of Sara Holt as the program’s newest assistant coach.

Holt comes to LSSU after spending the last two seasons (2015-17) as the assistant girls’ varsity basketball coach at Grand Rapids (Mich.) Catholic Central High School.  She also served as head national coach of the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Storm AAU 16 Under team from 2015-17.

“I’m very excited to add Sara to our staff,” said Lokken.  “She brings a strong passion for the game of basketball which our players are going to love being around.

“In talking to people around the state (Michigan), Sara is highly respected by other coaches for her work ethic.  I was able to get a sense of it just from working with her for a few days since she arrived.  She’s eager to get to work at LSSU and puts great detail into everything she does,” added Lokken.

“I’m very blessed and excited to start this new journey at Lake Superior State University,” said Holt, who began her LSSU position in July 2017.  “I’ve been welcomed by so many and it has made this transition that much easier for me.  I’m so grateful to be living out my dream and my biggest professional goal.”

Holt, who joined the LSSU program in late July 2017, spent 13 seasons (2002-15) directing the West Michigan Lady Titans AAU program along with being the assistant girls’ varsity basketball coach at Central Montcalm High School in Stanton, Mich., for two seasons (2011-13).

A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Holt began her basketball coaching career in 2001 as a girls’ varsity assistant at her alma mater Belding (Mich.) High School.  Holt spent the 2001-02 campaign as an assistant before being promoted to the school’s varsity head coaching post in 2002, a position she would hold until the conclusion of the 2005-06 season.  Along with her girls’ basketball head coaching duties, Holt took on the duties of head softball coach at BHS from 2001-05.

Holt played collegiate softball at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and competed for the Saints from 1997-00.  She graduated from Aquinas in 2000 with a bachelor of arts degree in secondary education and made the Dean’s List three years in a row.

A standout athlete and a 1995 graduate of Belding High, Holt was a four-year varsity letterwinner in both volleyball and softball while lettering three seasons in basketball.  She excelled in softball by twice earning all-state recognition along with being a three-time All-North Central Conference and all-district performer.  She also received all-region laurels on the diamond in each of her final two prep seasons (1994-95).  In volleyball, Holt was all-conference and all-district twice (1994-95) while achieving all-region accolades one season.  The two-time team captain concluded her prep career as the school’s all-time record holder in blocks, kills, and most blocks in a match.  She also was a four-year member of the school’s band and held membership two years in the National Honor Society.

The daughter of Sharon and the late Thomas Holt, Sara is the youngest of three siblings.  A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM), Holt resides in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and enjoys spending time with her dogs, camping, and listening to music.
