James Alfredo, a longtime local hoops coach, has been named the interim head women’s basketball skipper at Purchase College, Athletic Director Chris Bisignano announced.
Alfredo replaces Kellianne Dunlay midseason and will have an opportunity to retain the job following the second half of the winter campaign.
Alfredo, who is also the head golf coach at Purchase, is excited to take over. “We are happy to continue the effort, with the objectives of improving player development, and team play,” said Alfredo, who will be joined behind the bench by new assistant Jess Lindsay, a former Panther three-sport athlete (basketball, soccer and lacrosse) and 1,000-point scorer from the women’s hoops team.
Alfredo brings over 20 years of basketball coaching experience to the command, having previously coached at Harrison High School, Sacred Heart Academy, Greenwich High School and Purchase, where he was previously a women’s assistant. As a basketball coach, Alfredo’s teams have won eight Holiday Tournaments at the high school level; a second-place showing in the FAAs in 2007 in Greenwich; second-place in the Ramapo Holiday Tournament in 2011; qualified for the Connecticut State playoffs in seven of eight seasons; won the Western Division of the FCIACs twice; runner-up in the FCIAC tournament in 2014 (to the eventual State Champions), and a semifinal showing in the 2014 Connecticut State playoffs (placing 3rd in the state).
As a player, Alfredo varsity lettered twice, as a two-year starter, while a Harrison Husky, and was co-captain in his senior year. Alfredo received All-Division honors in New York’s Section 1, and received MVP Honors in a firs-place showing at the Rye Holiday Tournament. His Huskies made it to the Elite 8 round of the Section 1 playoffs his senior year, where he received All-Star honors at the Mike Kryzezswki basketball and Hal Wissel basketball camps. Alfredo would go on to play college basketball, but his playing time was limited at LaSalle University due to a re-occurring injury, suffered while playing at Manhattan College’s Draddy Gymnasium. After college, Alfredo was scouted and turned down an opportunity to play in the USBL.
“We are excited about the future of this team,” Alfredo said of the women’s basketball program at Purchase. “These kids are great. They work hard and give it their all on and off the court. It will be a pleasure to be with them, while we see how good we can get.”
