Peebles named new head women’s basketball coach at Sul Ross State

Katherine “Katie” Novak Peebles has been named new head women’s basketball coach at Sul Ross State University in an announcement by director of athletics Bobby Mesker. She replaces Caleb Henson who stepped down as head women’s coach in January.

Peebles comes to Sul Ross after serving at Our Lady of the Lake University (San Antonio) as an assistant coach. Before OLLU she served as a team camps coordinator at NCAA DIII Webster University in St. Louis, Mo. She also recruited throughout the Midwest at Webster.  In 2015-2016, Peebles helped guide OLLU to their fourth consecutive Red River Athletic Conference regular season title and their second RRAC Tournament title since 2012-13.

Peebles completed a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management with a minor in Psychology at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind. While at SJC, she was a starter and team captain for two years. She was a three-time All-Academic and All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection as well as a conference scholar athlete award winner. In addition, she won the department academic achievement award.

Peebles had ACL reconstructive surgery her senior year at Saint Joseph’s, placing her on medical red shirt status. Prior to fracturing her tibial plateau, Peebles averaged eight points and 29 minutes per game and shot 36 percent from beyond the arc despite missing 11 games. She spent the remainder of the season taking on more of a coaching role and assisted in preparing scouting reports and film for games. Peebles graduated Magna Cum Laude from Saint Joseph’s and went on to finish her basketball career at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio. She was in the first class of UIW athletes ever to compete at the NCAA Division I level after joining the Southland Conference. In May 2014, she earned a Master of Science in Sports Management from UIW.

Peebles spent six summers working for the Chicago Bulls Academy in Lisle, Ill., where she coached teams in the girl’s program from ages 10-18. She also worked the Chicago Bulls
Summer Camps, specializing in shooting technique, moves and guard work. In addition, Peebles interned with Acceleration Sports Performance in Naperville, Ill. in the summer of 2013. While there, she managed scheduling, payments, marketing and selling training packages. She gained extensive knowledge in weight training, specifically injury prevention workouts.

“I want to thank Bobby Mesker and everyone on the search committee for this opportunity,” Peebles said.  “From the moment I arrived on campus, I had a sense of family. For me, newly married, I am excited to put down roots here and join the campus and Alpine communities.”

“I can’t wait to start this new journey with the players; a journey I hope will be the best college experience I can provide for them,” she said. “I am ready to get to work with the players and add some Lady Lobos who are excited to come in and contribute.”

“We are excited to have coach Peebles join our staff,” said Mesker. “We are confident that her experience as a coach and former student-athlete at the college level will help build on and continue the success of our women’s basketball program.”

Peebles is a native of Homer Glen, Ill. In July 2016, she married Austin Peebles.
