Paul Reed, a highly-respected coach with nearly 20 years of coaching experience, has joined the Cal women’s basketball program as assistant coach, head coach Charmin Smith announced Friday.
Reed comes to Cal after spending the last four years as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Washington.
“I am thrilled to have Paul join our staff,” Smith said. “He has a love for player development and will be instrumental in the growth of our young group.”
During his time in Seattle, Reed helped the Huskies steadily rebuild, culminating with a trip to the Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals last season after upsetting No. 6-seed Colorado 68-54. Furthermore, Reed oversaw three All-Pac-12 players at UW and helped an impressive 11 student-athletes become members of the Pac-12 All-Academic team.
Reed is excited to continue his focus on academics with the Golden Bears.
“Cal is a great academic institution with a great history,” Reed said. “I am also very excited to work with Charmin and her staff. She is a remarkable spokesperson, role model and has had a long history of being a great recruiter. I believe in the vision she has for the program; I think she is going in the right direction and I look forward to being a part of it.”
At Cal, Reed will work with the post players, head recruiting efforts and assist on the defensive side of the ball.
“Paul is a hard worker who is willing to put in the time not only on the court, but also to cultivate strong relationships with current players, as well as recruits,” Smith added. “He knows the Pac-12 Conference extremely well and will be able to jump right in and help our program reach greater heights.”
Prior to his time at UW, Reed spent three seasons as an assistant at Long Beach State when the team posted a 69-30 overall record. His success included helping the squad to three consecutive 20-win campaigns which were highlighted with a Big West Conference Tournament championship in 2017 and a berth to the NCAA Tournament. Long Beach State reached the WNIT in each of the two years prior.
Prior to LBSU, Reed served as the head girls’ varsity basketball coach for two years at Cienega High School in Vail, Arizona. He compiled a 45-13 overall record and led the Bobcats to a pair of appearances in the state tournament. In 2014, Reed was named the Southern Arizona Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career after guiding Cienega to a regional championship and a runner-up finish at the Arizona Girls’ State Basketball Division II playoffs. Cienega concluded the season at 26-2.
Prior to his stint at CHS, Reed was the head coach of the girls’ varsity team in his hometown of Tucson at Tucson High School (2005-11). In his six years at the helm, Reed led the Badgers to four state tournaments and three regional titles. He was named the Southern Arizona Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and finished with a 129-63 overall record. In addition, Reed spent three years as a head coach for the Tucson Heat Basketball Club where he mentored two McDonald’s All-America nominees.
Reed was the director and founder of the Lady Badger Basketball Camp and also worked the USC Elite Camp. In addition, he worked with the offseason player development of high school athletes in the Tucson area as well as with members of the University of Arizona basketball team.
Reed earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Langston University (Oklahoma) in 1995. He was a two-year letterwinner in football and was a USA Today Small College All-American defensive back. Reed went on to receive his master’s in secondary education from the University of Phoenix.
