O’Regan extended through 2027-28 at James Madison

James Madison Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne has announced a three-year contract extension for women’s basketball Head Coach Sean O’Regan that will keep him under contract through the 2027-28 season.

“I’m happy to extend Sean O’Regan‘s contract and keep guiding our program well into the future,” Bourne said. “After a few years of adversity for our program, it was extremely fulfilling to watch the hard work by Sean and his program pay off with a return to the success that we’ve come to expect of that program. The team improved each week and played its best by the postseason to capture its first Sun Belt Championship and the second for JMU overall in its first season in the league. I’m excited to see what they will achieve in 2023-24 and well into the future.”

O’Regan is coming off a 26-8 (13-5 Sun Belt) season that saw the Dukes capture the Sun Belt Championship Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth. The conference championship was the program’s first since the 2015-2016 season when JMU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee coach Kenny Brooks was at the helm with O’Regan as an assistant.

In his seven years leading the program, O’Regan has compiled a record of 156-62 (.716), including five seasons with over 20 wins. This past season, Kiki Jefferson was named Sun Belt Player of the Year, while Peyton McDaniel was tabbed as the league’s Sixth Woman of the Year. The two dazzled in the SBC Tournament, with Jefferson earning the conference’s Most Outstanding Player award and McDaniel picking up All-Tournament Team honors.

Prior to JMU joining the Sun Belt, O’Regan coached two CAA Players of the Year, three CAA Rookies of the Year, one CAA Sixth Player of the Year, and a two-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year in Kayla Cooper Williams. He has also led the Dukes to three WNIT appearances, including a trip to the semifinals in 2019.

“I would like to thank our administration, Mr. Bourne, and President Alger for their confidence in me continuing to lead this program,” added O’Regan. “I would also like to thank my staff for the level of commitment and dedication they bring every day, it makes a big impact. Thank you JMU fans and community for all of your support, we are excited for the future.”

O’Regan enters his eighth season leading the Dukes at the start of the 2023-24 season. He is set to return key players Peyton McDaniel, Kseniia Kozlova, and Jamia Hazell. The program also welcomes four transfers and one true freshman for the fall.
