CU Women’s Basketball head coach Beth O’Boyle has announced the addition of Mia Nickson as the Director of Basketball Operations.
“I’m very excited to welcome Mia to the VCU family. She brings a wealth of experience as a former student-athlete at Penn State and being part of the staff at Boston College. We think she will be a great role model for our student-athletes and her knowledge and passion for the game will also greatly benefit our staff,” said O’Boyle.
A former standout at Penn State, Nickson joins VCU after spending this past season as a graduate assistant at Boston College. While at BC, Nickson coordinated and managed the Eagles student managers and assisted with recruitment of practice players.
Nickson also coordinated practice times for opposing teams, helped organize meals while traveling and provided support with recruiting efforts in addition to organizing community service opportunities for the Eagles.
“I’m grateful and excited for the opportunity to work with coach O’Boyle and her staff. I’m really looking forward to immersing myself into VCU’s culture and making positive contributions to the team and the student-athletes,” said Nickson.
As a player, Nickson helped lead the Nittany Lions to two Big Ten Championships and served as a one of the team’s captains for three seasons. She earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention Honors in 2011 and completed her career ranked 10th in Penn State history in rebounding average. Nickson was a two-time All-Big Ten Academic Team member and was named to the NCAA Tournament Kingston All-Region Team in 2012.
Prior to BC, Nickson worked for Apex Systems and also spent time as a volunteer coach for Saint John’s Catholic Prep High School and with Team Assist’s U16 Summer League team.
Nickson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Labor Employment Relations and Communications Arts and Sciences from Penn State in 2013. She received her master’s degree from George Washington in Organization Leadership and Learning in 2017.
