Meredith Shipman Named Western Michigan Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach

The Western Michigan women’s basketball team and Head Coach Shane Clipfell has announced the hiring of Meredith Shipman as a new assistant coach on Monday, August 5.

Shipman, a former Bronco women’s basketball player from 2013-17, will transition from being the 2019-20 Director of Basketball Operations to a member of the coaching staff. As the DOBO, Shipman assisted in day-to-day program operations, administrative duties, travel logistics, film breakdown, and volunteer service coordination. Prior to returning to WMU, Shipman served as an assistant coach at Davenport University for two seasons under head coach Rick Albro.

“I am very excited about Meredith Shipman moving from the Director Of Operations position into the Assistant Coaching position,” Clipfell said. “When we knew we were going to make a new hire, we simply observed Meredith in the role that she was in and it was very clear she is extremely qualified and a terrific fit for this position. She played here 4 years, she already knows a lot about how we go about things here, and she has a very good basketball mind. She will be heavily involved in all aspects of our program. I know Bronco Fans will join me in this excitement of having her move into her new role here with our program.”

WMU went 10-20 overall in its previous season with a 4-13 Mid-American Conference record, earning their way to the MAC Tournament at the end of the 2018-19 season. The Broncos fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies in the first round by a single point to conclude their season that included matchups against competitive Power Five schools and 2019 NCAA tournament qualifiers.

In her four-year playing career at Western, Shipman was fourth in career three-pointers made (177), 11th in career assists (285) and 13th in career steals (159). She finished her career tied for the third highest free-throw percentage (81.4 %) and ninth highest 3-point field goal percentage (.348). Shipman played 127 total games over her career and started in all 32 games both her junior and senior year, earning Third Team All-MAC honors in her senior year. She served as team captain for two years and was a two-time Academic All-MAC recipient, MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete, and was voted WMU’s Teammate Award twice.
