McKamie Place Named Berry Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach

The Berry College women’s basketball program announced McKamie Place as the team’s new assistant coach this afternoon.

“We’re really excited about adding McKamie to our staff,” head coach Thomas Johnson said. “She comes in with good Division III knowledge as a coach and a player. She’s going to do a great job with our post development and is already a great recruiter. I’m excited to be adding her to our basketball and Berry family.”

Place joins Berry most recently from the University of Texas-Tyler women’s basketball program where she served as the team’s assistant coach to the 13-11 Patriots. Prior to joining UT Tyler, Place served as the assistant coach at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. The 2017-18 Knights finished the season at the Skyline Conference Championship after a 21-7 season.

“Since my undergraduate days at Southwestern University, I have been seeking a feeling of home as an assistant basketball coach,” Place said. “This is why I am beyond honored and humbled to accept this position at Berry. Coach Thomas Johnson has already been a mentor to me and I look forward to learning from him in the years ahead. I want to thank Berry College, especially its athletic department, for making this move feel like home and for adding me to the Berry family.”

Prior to Mount Saint Mary, Place helped the women’s basketball team at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (NCAA Division III) in Belton, Texas, to a 15-11 record in 2015-2016. A year later, she assisted the women’s basketball team at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas to a 21-7 overall record in the Heartland Conference (NCAA Division II).

In college, Place played Division III basketball at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Averaging 5.7 points per game, she shot 42.3% from the floor and 40.5% from three point range her senior year. In 2015, she led Southwestern and the SCAC in 3-point percentage shooting, while guiding her team to a conference championship.

Place received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology from Southwestern in 2015. In 2016, she graduated from Sam Houston State University, Summa Cum Laude, obtaining a Master of Science in Kinesiology Sport and Human Performance.

Orignally from Gatesville, Texas, Place currently resides in Rome.
