McCallie to Take Medical Leave of Absence

Effective Monday, April 16, Duke University women’s basketball head coach Joanne P. McCallie will take a medical leave of absence for approximately two months to address a correctable kidney-related ailment, which was originally diagnosed in November of 2017. She will start a short term treatment program soon.

“To be sure, we wish Joanne the absolute best as she continues to manage this medical situation,” said Duke Vice President & Director of Athletics Kevin White. “Joanne’s health and long-term well-being is by far the most important matter at hand, and her highly capable staff will undoubtedly do great work while she recovers fully. Certainly, we look forward to Joanne’s imminent return to lead Duke Women’s Basketball well into the future.”

McCallie recently completed her 11th season at the helm of the Blue Devils and has helped lead Duke to a 297-80 overall record, 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and three ACC Championships. Over her 26 years as a head coach, she has compiled a 613-228 ledger, taken five teams to the NCAA Elite Eight and advanced to the 2005 NCAA Final Four.
