Lopez named Associate Head Coach at Sacramento State

Sacramento State women’s basketball head coach Mark Campbell announced on Monday the first member of his staff, associate head coach Xavier Lopez.

Lopez, who goes by “Xavi” (Cha-vee) served on the Oregon women’s basketball staff alongside Campbell for the last seven years, including the last four as an assistant coach. He was a key part of the program’s five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and its Final Four run in 2019.

“I am thrilled to have Xavi as my Associate Head Coach,” said Campbell on Monday. “We have worked together for the last seven years and I know he is the best international recruiter in women’s basketball. More importantly, he is a relationship builder who will be an incredible mentor to these young women.”

With Oregon, Lopez assisted with scouting and recruiting, including leading the Ducks’ international recruiting efforts. Under his watch, the Ducks were able to recruit Germany’s Satou Sabally, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 WNBDA draft, and Spain’s Maite Cazorla, the 23rd overall pick in 2019, to Eugene.

Lopez also worked directly with the team’s guards, overseeing a squad that led the nation in three-point shooting in 2018-19, hitting 41.5% of its three-point attempts, while ranking fourth in overall shooting at 50.1%.

Originally from Barcelona, Lopez played professionally in Spain for six years for the Bilbao Basket in the prestigious ACB Spanish League, among other clubs.

Prior to his professional career, Lopez played collegiately at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore. and at Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego, Calif., from which he graduated in 2007.

Lopez is married to Megan Lopez, and he and his wife have one daughter, Katie.
