– Faisal Khan has been promoted to Associate Head Coach, it was announced today by Hofstra Head Women’s Basketball Coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey.
Khan had been an assistant coach the previous two seasons with the Pride and has served a total of four seasons as an assistant on Kilburn-Steveskey’s staff. In his first tenure, from 2008-10, he helped Hofstra win a combine 36 games and was a part of the 2009-10 team that qualified for the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
“It is with great pleasure to announce the promotion of Faisal Khan to the position of Associate Head Coach,” Kilburn-Steveskey said. “His work ethic, knowledge of the game and philosophy on building a program makes this a natural progression. He has been a tremendous asset in helping to develop our student-athletes in the classroom and on the court, and I look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role.”
In his first season back at Hofstra, Khan was part of a staff that helped develop Candace Bond into the Colonial Athletic Association’s Defensive Player of the Year for the 2012-13 campaign. During that time, Shante Evans earned her third consecutive CAA First-Team selection and was named All-Met First Team for the third straight season after setting Hofstra career records for points and rebounds and the league record for total rebounds.
This past season, Khan was part of the coaching effort that saw a pair of seniors in Anma Onyeuku and Annie Payton earn All-CAA third-team honors. Off the court, Khan has worked with the Hofstra staff to participate in charitable endeavors, such as the Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN), a Long Island based food pantry as well as monitoring the academic progress of Hofstra’s women’s basketball student-athletes.
Khan returned to Hofstra with nearly a decade of experience coaching collegiate women’s basketball, including five seasons at UNC Asheville. During his time with the Bulldogs, Khan was part of a staff that took over a team that won one game in 2001-02 and by his second season the team won 19 games, and would go on to win 18, 15 and 21 in subsequent seasons. In his final four seasons there, the program would average more than 18 wins a season and in 2006-07 captured its first-ever Big South title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to his stint at UNC Asheville, Khan spent one season each at Shepherd University (Shepherdstown, West Virginia) and West Virginia Wesleyan College (Buckhannon, West Virginia). During his one season at Shepherd the Rams won 19 games and in his year at West Virginia Wesleyan the team advanced to the conference quarterfinals and won 10 conference contests.
A 1999 graduate of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County with a degree in social work and a minor psychology, Khan has also worked as a programs manager with Peace Players International in South Africa and as a social work intern with the Springfield Psychiatric State Hospital in Carroll County, Maryland.
