Johns Hopkins women’s basketball coach Nancy Funk announced Kate Dellinger as the new assistant coach. Dellinger will replace seven-year assistant coach Katie Nelson and join Funk and assistant coach Wanda Richardson.
Dellinger will assist the Blue Jays with guard development, practice and game planning and video analysis and exchanges within the Centennial Conference in addition to increasing Johns Hopkins women’s basketball’s social media visibility.
“I am honored to join a program with such a rich history of success and grateful for the opportunity to learn under Coach Funk,” Dellinger said. “I am extremely excited to coach some of the best and brightest student-athletes around, and I look forward to building upon the winning tradition here at Hopkins.”
Dellinger comes to JHU from Widener University, where she played four years of basketball before working as an assistant coach for three years. As an assistant at Widener, Dellinger was the recruiting coordinator. She also assisted in guard development, fundraising and team promotion for the Pride.
“We are very fortunate to have found Kate so late in the summer to replace Katie Nelson, who was named the head coach at the Milwaukee School of Engineering,” Funk said. “Kate brings a solid and successful basketball background along with very good experience as an assistant at Widener.”
Dellinger garnered many individual accolades for her performance on the court and off at Widener. Dellinger finished her playing career as a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, two-time honorable mention WBCA All-American and two-time D3 Hoops All-Mid-Atlantic Region. As a senior, the guard was a 2013 Jostens Trophy Finalist, 2013 MAC Woman of the Year Nominee and The Philadelphia Inquirer 2013 Women’s Athletic Performer of the Year. The Philadelphia Inquirer honored Dellinger as a two-time Academic All-Area Performer of the Year and a three-time member of the Academic All-Area Team. Dellinger was also named the MAC Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year in 2012 and a three-time First Team All-Commonwealth team member.
“I am confident that Kate will be an outstanding addition to our staff,” Funk added. “Our players will benefit greatly from her teaching, and I look forward to working with her.”
A native of York, PA, Dellinger is a 2013 graduate of Widener University and has a master’s degree in exercise science from California University of Pennsylvania.
