SUMMARY

Primarily and independently responsible to fulfill all position-specific requirements to create a viable NCAA D-II women’s basketball program.

II.  QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three (3) years experience as a collegiate assistant coach required; prior experience as a head coach and player is preferred.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • REASONING: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • COMPUTER SKILLS: Proficient in Microsoft Office, email, web-based applications and recruiting software (Front Rush) is required.
  • OTHER: A valid, current, driver’s license and NCAA Rules Compliance Certification are required; ability to travel out of town for extended periods, work evenings, nights, and weekends is mandatory. Current certification or ability to obtain certification in First Aid / CPR / AED is required. Commitment to implementing the mission, vision and values of a Catholic, Jesuit, university.

III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Primarily and independently train and prepare student athletes, teach sport-specific skills, tactics, and philosophy; schedule and direct practices; conduct sport-specific physical training and conditioning programs for student athletes both in-season and in the off-season.
  • Primarily and independently supervise assistant coaches and graduate assistants per University policies; hire, train, direct, monitor, correct and appraise performance.
  • Primarily and independently responsible for ensuring that current student athletes are making satisfactory academic progress; work with the Faculty Academic Representative, the Academic Coordinator, and the Registrar to monitor grades of individuals and the team, establish and coordinate study halls, provide mentors and tutors as needed and ensure all student athletes are academically eligible per NCAA and conference requirements and entered correctly into the NCAA Compliance Program.
  • Primarily and independently accountable for scouting and recruiting future student athletes according to NCAA, conference, and University policies; assess athletic talent and academic performance of potential student athletes; determine who meets the athletic requirements of the women’s basketball program and the University’s academic standards; coordinate scholarships per the University’s approved model.
  • Primarily and independently responsible for the following activities in support of the women’s basketball program:
    • Assist with creation of program budget; monitor expenses and remain within budgeted parameters;
    • Purchase uniforms and equipment through Athletic Administration;
    • Coordinate pre-season medical exams for student-athletes through Athletic Training;
    • Scout opponents and prepare game plans;
    • Establish itineraries and make travel arrangements;
    • Available during posted hours for consultation with members of the team.
  • Assist the Sports Information Director (SID) in organization of sports information materials, i.e. media guides, press releases, etc., for the team; support SID in community public relations programs involving women’s basketball.
  • Represent the University in all activities pertaining to women’s basketball.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the Director or designee.
  • Compliance Responsibilities Ensure NCAA, conference and University policies and mandated requirements are correctly interpreted and met and documentation is maintained per policies and procedures; maintain qualifications and certification and complete annual training as required by position.
