Description:

Under indirect supervision, this position is responsible for creating and maintaining a successful basketball program for the institution, fostering a competitive team that contends for the conference title while emphasizing the development of young women as student-athletes that will become leaders in their career fields and our society. This position reports directly to the Senior Associate Athletics Director, keeping him/her abreast of all planning, organizing, staff and development of Northern Arizona University’s women’s basketball program.

Job Description

The Head Coach is responsible for directing and administering a NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball program. Responsibilities include, but not limited to, hiring and supervision of assistant coaches; practice and game-day planning and preparation; recruiting; scouting; budgeting; planning; organizing; scheduling; player development; monitoring academic progress/performance; promoting intercollegiate athletics; community outreach; and ensuring compliance with NCAA conference rules/ regulations and eligibility of players.
The Head Coach’s essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Support the mission and philosophy of NAU
  • Hire and supervise assistant coaches
  • Supervise and participate in the recruitment of student-athletes
  • Retain and graduate student-athletes
  • Plan and manage team travel
  • Supervise and manage the inventory of sports equipment
  • Oversee the budget for the program
  • Schedule facilities to facilitate practice
  • Plan, organize, and participate in practice and games
  • Conduct coaching clinics/seminars for assistant coaches
  • Speak and participate in promotional activities and assist the Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics in fundraising activities
  • Work in liaison with community groups to encourage and foster their participation in the athletic activities or events
  • Serve on university, conference, or national level committees as appropriate
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years of previous Women’s Basketball coaching experience at the collegiate level
  • Three years of previous Women’s Basketball coaching experience at the Division I level
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree
  • Head Coaching Experience

  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
