IPFW women’s basketball head coach Niecee Nelson has announced the appointment of Ty Shaw as her top assistant coach for the 2016-17 season.
Shaw comes to IPFW after spending the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach with the men’s program at Fresno Pacific University. He has coached professionally in Germany and England from 2003-06 and 2012-15, and has spent over a decade working at various camps throughout the United States, Germany, England and Australia.
“Ty is a valuable addition to my coaching staff,” Nelson says. “His work ethic, strong character and ability to recruit internationally will be key to the success of this program. He is a true teacher of the game with a diverse coaching background. Ty shares my vision for the direction of this team and I am excited to have him on board.”
Under Shaw’s guidance, seven players received invitations to German National Team camps while he was at Basketball Teilzeit Internat. Of those seven players, four were selected to play for Germany’s Junior National team while a fifth was selected to compete on the German Senior Women’s National team.
While at Fresno Pacific, Shaw was involved in every aspect of the program including recruiting, planning practices, scouting opponents and monitoring academic progress of players.
Prior to FPU, Shaw spent three years coaching professionally in Germany. He most recently served as the head coach in the German Pro B league for Uni Riesen Leipzig. He served as the head coach of the White Wings Hanau in 2013-14, leading the team to a first place finish in the South Division. The previous year he led TV Langen to a second place finish and was named runner-up for the Pro B Coach of the Year. Shaw began the year coaching the TV Langen U18 club team to a perfect 21-0 record, not only finishing in first place but winning State and Regional titles and advancing to the national tournament.
Prior to coaching in Germany, Shaw spent 2003-06 coaching in England at the University of Worcester and for the Worcester Wolves. While at the university, the team compiled a record of 35-4 and twice led the team to the national title of the British Universities and College of Sports, once as an assistant coach and once as the head coach. During all three seasons, his team finished first in the Premier North Division. Shaw earned the 2004 English National Basketball Association Coaching Award.
Shaw played college basketball for The College of Idaho, known then as Albertson College of Idaho, from 2000-02. He led the Coyotes to a 2001 NAIA National Tournament quarterfinal appearance and was named a 2001 NAIA Division II All-American Honorable Mention. He went on to play professionally in Germany, England, and Australia for ten years following graduation, winning nine championships.
Shaw, a native of Ontario, Oregon, earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a double major in marketing and history from Albertson College, in 2002. Shaw and his wife, Alexandra, have a son, Declan.
