INTERIM TAG REMOVED: Lyman named Head WBB Coach at UW-River Falls

Crystal Lanning, UW-River Falls’ Director of Athletics, announced Thursday, April 6, that Shelby Lyman has accepted the role as permanent head coach of UW-River Falls Women’s Basketball.

“I am excited that Coach Lyman will continue to lead our women’s basketball program as head coach, Lanning commented. “Over the past four years, she has helped elevate the profile and competitiveness of Falcon women’s basketball, and I look forward to watching the program continue to grow under her leadership.”

Lyman served as the UWRF Women’s Basketball Interim Head Coach during the 2022-23 season and spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach.

“I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to lead this program and grateful for the support and belief that Crystal Lanning and Kellen Wells-Mangold have in myself and our staff,” Lyman said. “I love River Falls, I love being able to work with our incredible student-athletes day in and day out and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Falcon women’s basketball.”

Under Lyman this past season, the Falcons turned in a 14-11 overall record, UWRF’s first winning season since 2017-18.

The Falcons went 10-1 during their non-conference schedule and earned wins over nationally ranked opponents UW-Whitewater, the 2022 national runners-up, and UW-Eau Claire, the reigning WIAC Champions.

Additionally, UWRF led the WIAC with 195 made three-point field goals, the second-most in program history, following the 2021-22 season’s total of 206.

Lyman, a native of Snohomish, Wash., came to River Falls in 2019 after serving as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Cornell University, for two years. Before Cornell, she had a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Division III powerhouse St. John Fisher College, guiding the Cardinals to an Empire 8 championship in 2015 and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.

A 2014 graduate of Cornell University, Lyman was one of the most prolific three-point shooters in Cornell history. She became the only freshman to play a full 40 minutes in a season opener and went on to set the program record for games started (109) and ranked second all-time in career games played (111). Lyman also finished her Big Red career ranked third all-time in three-point field goals made (144).
