HOT: Roos gets extension at Bowling Green

Bowling Green State University Director of Athletics D. Christopher Kingston has announced a two-year contract extension for head women’s basketball coach Jennifer Roos. Roos’ contract now runs through May 1, 2019.

"We are pleased to offer Jennifer Roos this contract extension, as our commitment to her and trust in how she leads the women’s basketball program at Bowling Green has never been stronger," said Kingston. "Jennifer is a leader who has demonstrated sustained, high-level achievement, on and off the court, and consistently attracts the best student-athletes to join the Falcon Family. The best predictor of future success is past success and I look forward to having Jennifer continue leading this program to greatness."

Roos is in her third season as head coach of the Falcons and her 14th with the program. She assumed the head-coaching position on April 16, 2012, after 11 years as an assistant coach on the BG staff, the final eight as associate head coach.

Since Roos arrived at BGSU, the Falcons have fashioned an overall record of 321-128 and a MAC mark of 165-63. Those numbers represent a success rate of nearly 72 percent overall and a winning percentage of almost 73% in conference action.

Over the last 11-plus years, however, the numbers are even more staggering. The Falcons are 300-93 (76.3%) overall, 154-42 (78.6%) in MAC regular-season play and 177-48 (78.7%) in all games vs. league foes during that time.

"I would like to thank BGSU President Mary Ellen Mazey along with Chris Kingston, Lesley Irvine and the athletic administration for their belief in and support of the women’s basketball program," said Roos. "Bowling Green is a very special University, with a vision that prepares our students to become leaders, global citizens and life-long learners. I am very fortunate to be a part of this commitment to our students.

"One of the main focuses of our women’s basketball program is to bring student-athletes to BGSU who want to share in that vision of success in the classroom, in the community and on the court."

Last winter, in her second season as a collegiate head coach, Roos was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, and also earned Russell Athletic/WBCA Region 4 C-O-Y honors after leading BGSU to 30 wins, a conference regular-season title and to three wins in the WNIT. The Falcons went 30-5 overall and 17-1 in the MAC, and the overall win total was the second-highest in school – and league – history.

The 2013-14 Falcons won more than 20 games for the 11th consecutive season, a MAC record, and BGSU became only the second team in MAC history to win as many as 30 games in a season, joining the 2006-07 BG team on that elite list. The Falcons advanced to national postseason play for the 10th consecutive year (also a MAC record), qualifying for the WNIT, and the Falcons won three national postseason games in a season for the first time in program history, advancing all the way to the quarterfinal round of the 64-team tourney.

In her first season at the helm, Roos guided the Falcons to an overall record of 24-11 and an 11-5 league ledger. The 2012-13 team advanced to the third round of the WNIT. That team, like last year’s BG club, lost a narrow decision to the eventual WNIT champion.

This year, Roos and her staff have guided a youthful Falcon squad through an injury-filled season. Four of the 12 student-athletes on the preseason roster, including a pair of starters, had suffered season-ending injuries by the first week of January. A fifth player (and third starter) saw injuries limit her to just 35 total minutes played during the MAC schedule.

Even prior to her appointment as head coach, Roos was a major reason for the program’s incredible run of success. She joined Curt Miller’s staff in July of 2001, and helped the Falcons to at least one MAC championship of some kind in each of Miller’s last eight seasons. BGSU won eight-straight MAC divisional titles from 2005-12, earning the league’s outright regular-season title in seven of those eight years. BG also captured five MAC Tournament crowns in that time.

Roos was in charge of the Falcon defense during her tenure on Miller’s staff, and also served as the team’s recruiting coordinator. After three years as an assistant coach with the Falcons, she was elevated to associate head coach in 2004. She assumed interim head-coaching duties in January of 2012, and led the Falcons to a 2-0 record, with wins over Central Michigan and Northern Illinois.

Roos and the Falcons open MAC Tournament play on Monday night (March 9), facing Western Michigan in first-round action in Kalamazoo, Mich.
