Head Coach Tricia Cullop and the University of Miami Women’s Basketball program announce the hiring of Gene Hill as Associate Head Coach.
Hill brings nearly three decades of coaching experience with recent stops at Georgia State, NC State, and Georgia Tech. Hill has also developed several WNBA draftees and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
“I’m excited to join the U family. I’ve known Coach Cullop for over 20 years and have always admired her ability to build and sustain successful programs,” said Hill. “There are very few places that offer what Miami women’s basketball does, a top-tier academic institution in a vibrant international city, the opportunity to compete in one of the nation’s premier conferences, and the chance to work alongside outstanding people every day.”
Hill joins the Hurricanes following eight seasons as head coach at Georgia State. Prior to his time in Atlanta, he spent five seasons on staff at NC State and four seasons at Georgia Tech, contributing to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances at both programs.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome Gene Hill to our staff,” said head coach Tricia Cullop. “Gene is a proven winner with head coaching experience and a track record of success at the highest level of the ACC. He has developed elite talent, coaching and mentoring All-ACC performers and WNBA prospects, and understands what it takes to prepare players to compete and succeed on the biggest stages.”
“Just as important, Gene’s relationships across the country are second to none and will have an immediate impact on our recruiting efforts. He knows how to identify, connect with, and develop high-level student-athletes who want to be part of something special.”
“I’ve known Gene for most of my coaching career, and he represents everything we value in our program: integrity, a relentless work ethic, and a deep knowledge of the game. Our players will benefit tremendously from his leadership.”
During his five seasons at NC State, Hill helped the Wolfpack compile a 112-52 record, including three NCAA Tournament appearances and a Sweet 16 berth in his final season. In his first season, NC State went 25-8, finished fourth in the ACC and earned an NCAA Tournament appearance. While on staff, Hill and the Wolfpack also advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 in 2016-17.
Hill worked closely with All-ACC guards Miah Spencer and Dominique Wilson, both of whom went to play professionally. He has consistently played a key role in the development of perimeter players, emphasizing skill progression, decision-making, and preparation for the professional level.
Prior to NC State, Hill spent four seasons at Georgia Tech, where the Yellow Jackets made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program’s first Sweet 16 in 2012. During his time in Atlanta, he was a key contributor in the development of WNBA draft picks Alex Montgomery and Sasha Goodlett, both first-round selections.
Hill also spent six seasons on staff at Butler, including time as associate head coach, and served as interim head coach at East Carolina during the 2001-02 season. His coaching career began at Coker College and included stops at Lander and USC Spartanburg, where he served as head coach.
A native of LaGrange, Georgia, Hill graduated from Coker (S.C.) College in 1997 with a degree in physical education.
