Coe College women’s basketball Head Coach Randi (Peterson) Henderson has resigned to pursue other coaching opportunities, Director of Athletics John Chandler announced Friday.
Henderson has accepted a job as assistant coach at NCAA Division I North Carolina-Charlotte. Henderson will be reunited with former University of Iowa teammate Cara Consuegra, who is entering her fifth year as head coach.
“Coe College and the community here have been a blessing to Duez and my life. I have thoroughly enjoyed contributing to the growth of the women’s basketball program. I will miss this place very much, but feel the opportunity I am pursuing at North Carolina-Charlotte is a great next step for us,” Henderson said.
A two-time Iowa Conference Coach of the Year (2010 & 2011), Henderson led the Kohawks to two Iowa Conference women’s basketball titles. The Kohawks also won the Iowa Conference Tournament Titles in 2011 and 2012, advancing to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament in both years. Coe’s 2010-11 squad set the school record with 26 wins, as they advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
“We wish Randi well in her new coaching opportunity,” Chandler said. “With two Iowa Conference championships and two trips to the NCAA Tournament, Randi elevated our program to one of the best in the Iowa Conference.”
Henderson compiled a 155-91 record in nine seasons at Coe. Her 155 wins are the most wins by a basketball coach at Coe, male or female.
“I want to sincerely thank John Chandler for believing in me as a coach and person nine years ago. I also want to thank all the parents and players that have blessed my life and allowed me to impact theirs,” Henderson added.
A national search for a new coach is underway.
