Harvard’s Moore inks extension through 2030

Erin McDermott, The John D. Nichols ’53 Family Director of Athletics, announced today that Harvard and The Kathy Delaney-Smith Head Coach for Harvard Women’s Basketball, Carrie Moore, have agreed to an extension through 2030.

“This extension honors the extraordinary nature of what Carrie Moore has done in three years,” McDermott said.  “The team’s results speak for themselves, but the more impressive factor of Carrie’s impact is the culture and community that she has built in a short time to create excitement and to achieve the team success we’ve celebrated.  She is an example of our values that outcomes are the result of culture and developing and inspiring teams.”

In just three years at the helm, Moore has brought a championship culture back to Cambridge and lifted the Crimson back into the national spotlight. Her 60 wins since 2022 mark the most in a coach’s first three seasons in program history.

“I am so grateful for Erin’s continued trust and belief in me and our program,” Moore said.  “I firmly believe you win with people, and I am so fortunate to lead an incredible group of players and staff.  We have all worked tirelessly the past three years to get to this point.  I am eager to find ways to improve what we do and how we play in order of take the steps necessary to compete for championships consistently and make more history.”

This past season, Moore led the Crimson to arguably the most historic season in Harvard women’s basketball’s 50-year history.  Harvard set a program record with 24 wins, defeated a top 25 opponent for just the second time in the last 25 years, received votes in the AP Top 25 poll 16 different times, and won its first-ever Ivy League Tournament Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007.  Individually, Moore was named a finalist for the 2025 Kathy Delaney-Smith Mid-Major Coach of the Year and the World Exposure Report Mid-Major Coach of the Year.

Moore has established a defensive identity in Cambridge as the squad ranked as one of the top defenses in the nation throughout the 2024-25 season.  For several weeks the Crimson ranked as the top scoring defense in the country and finished the season inside the top 5 while holding opponents to 52.9 points per game.

The Detroit, MI native has continually made history since stepping on campus in 2022. In her first season at the helm, Moore led the Crimson to its first 20-win season since 2017, a feat that she has now accomplished twice in three years.  Additionally, Harvard made a historic WNIT run in the 2022-23 season, reaching the Great 8 to mark the furthest postseason run in program history.  In each of Moore’s three seasons she has gotten the Crimson to the Ivy League Tournament, cementing Harvard as a consistent title contender.
