Grand Canyon Head Coach Trent May Achieves 300th Win

He is too humble to talk about his personal accomplishments, but the people that coach alongside him and play for him realize the meaning of 300 wins. Grand Canyon women’s basketball coach Trent May reached a milestone in his coaching career recording his 300th win as a head coach after pulling out a victory on the road against Utah Valley.

“It’s a great testament of coach being consistent every day,” associate head coach Corey Cole said who has been with May the last eight seasons at Grand Canyon. “He is always prepared and shows great leadership and the ladies have bought into it.”

May displays a quiet yet intense demeanor whether it’s at practice, in the film room or on the court that has his players fight so hard for him. He has found a way to be tough with his players but yet they know he has their best interest at heart. When you are a part of Coach May’s program, you are a part of his family by showing care and concern for your life outside of basketball.

“Coach May has been one of the best coaches I have ever had in my life,” senior Cheyenne Hedrington said. “He cares about basketball but he cares more about my personal life, and in that aspect, I respect him so much because he cares.”

In 2000, May got his first shot at being a head coach at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., and he took full advantage of his opportunity. May averaged over 21 wins per season in six seasons at Bethany, including a 30-win season in the 2002-03 campaign.

May has continued his success at Grand Canyon as he holds the most wins in Grand Canyon women’s basketball history with 173 wins, nearly four times as many wins as the second-winningest coach, Julie Hanks. May has recorded four seasons with 20 or more wins and has a winning percentage of .681. He has been able to not only challenge his players, but also his coaching staff in order to make their players better on and off the court.

“He kills us with preparation,” Cole said with a smile on his face. “He is very detail-oriented and always worries about the little things and as a result, you are always prepared for every situation. We have never gone into a game where we are not prepared and that is what has made us successful.”

May has gone all across the country and even the world to recruit college basketball players and he has touched many lives through basketball. If you are one of the lucky players to be recruited by May and his staff, you will not only have success on the court but he will also make sure you are successful after college. The proof is on May’s coaching staff with his former players as athletic trainer Whitney Lee once played for May at GCU in 2008 and video coordinator Jasmine Grayson played for May from 2012-2014.

“He is caring and loving but he is also intense because he love what he does,” Hedrington said.

The care he has shown his players since he started coaching in 1996 has led him to this point, 300 wins, and the most wins by a current WAC coach at their current school.
