Gottlieb Earns 100th Victory as Cal’s Head Coach

It took just 131 games for Lindsay Gottlieb to earn her 100th win as the head coach of the California Golden Bears, and she hit the historic mark in style with the Bears claiming a 74-59 win against Oregon Thursday at Matthew Knight Arena.

Gottlieb becomes the quickest coach in program history to reach the 100-win mark, and she now joins Tara VanDerveer and Charli Turner Thorne as the only head coaches in the Pac-12 with at least 100 wins at their respective institutions. VanDerveer, who has 796 wins at Stanford, earned her 100th win in her 137th game on the Farm, and Turner Thorne earned her 100th win at ASU in her 191st game, making Gottlieb the quickest active Pac-12 coach to earn 100 at her respective institution.

"I’m really lucky to be the head coach at Cal," Gottlieb said. "I’ve had an unbelievable coaching staff for four years and players. More than the wins, there have just been so many incredible moments. That’s what’s most meaningful. I’m really fortunate. Most importantly, it’s a big win for our team, so a good night all around."

The Bears (21-7, 13-4 Pac-12) led by as many as 26 points Thursday to improve Gottlieb to a perfect 6-0 against the Ducks (12-16, 5-12 Pac-12) in her tenure. The win makes it four consecutive seasons with at leas 13 victories in the conference and keeps Cal in line for a third-place finish in the standings ahead of next week’s Pac-12 Tournament.

‘We’ve done some things to become an elite program on the national level," Gottlieb said. "(But) We’re not done. We want to fight for Pac-12 championships every year, but (with) the strength of the year now, if you’re doing that your’e one of the best teams in the country. We just want to continue to do it with great people, incredible student-athletes that played hard and play a certain way, which is together. This is just the beginning."

The Bears dished a total of 24 assists on 30 made field goals with four players – Brittany Boyd, Mikayla Cowling, Gabby Green and Mercedes Jefflo – each getting at least five assists each to lead Cal to the total team win.

Boyd scored a team-high 17 points to go with six assists, three rebounds and three steals to lead the Bears, and Reshanda Gray added 13 points, five rebounds and three blocks.

And as fitting as it was for the two seniors who have been in Berkeley for all 100 wins to lead the team Thursday, it was also three of her first Golden Bear commitments that added to the scoring with Jefflo scoring 13, Cowling scoring 10 and Courtney Range adding nine points off the bench.

Jefflo and Range each hit three 3’s Thursday on a night that saw the Bears hit a season-best 11 3-pointers.

After leading 38-24 at halftime, Cal saw Oregon come out quickly in the second half with the Ducks coming as close as nine points, 50-41, with 14:13 remaining. However, California ran out on a 17-0 run over the next six minutes to put away any doubt by taking a 67-41 lead with 8:51 remaining in the game.

Cal closes out its regular season slate against No. 7 Oregon State on Saturday, Feb. 28. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks.
