Gardner-Webb Adds Young to Staff

Gardner-Webb head women’s basketball coach Rick Reeves is pleased to announce the hire of Alex Young as an assistant women’s basketball with the Runnin’ Bulldogs for the upcoming 2014-15 season.

"Alex used to attend my basketball camps when she was a player at Saint Stephens [High School]," explained Reeves. "We are very glad to have her on staff as a coach. She was not only a quality player at Boston University, and a quality coach at University of Chicago, but she is also a quality person and I look forward to working with her on a day-to-day basis."

Young joins the Runnin’ Bulldogs following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Chicago, helping the Maroons to a second-place finish in the University Athletic Association and a 15-10 overall record last season.

"I am extremely excited to be joining the Gardner-Webb staff," said Young. "The welcoming environment, tradition of success and competitive atmosphere at GWU drew me in immediately and I’m enormously grateful for this opportunity."

A native of nearby Hickory, N.C., Young captained Boston University from 2009 to 2012 and helped the program to an overall record of 81-46 in her four-year career. The Terriers reached postseason play three times during Young’s career, earning a pair of America East regular season titles.

Young currently ranks second on the Terriers list for career 3-pointers made, third for 3-pointers in a season, 10th in all-time scoring and was named to the America East All-Conference Third Team on two occasions. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication.
