Fowler departs D3 Lyon College; Named WBB Head Coach at D2 TAMIU

Texas A&M International University has announced the hiring of Coach Casey Fowler as the new Head Coach of the Dustdevils Women’s Basketball Program.

With a proven track record of success and a deep commitment to player development and team culture, Coach Fowler brings a wealth of experience to TAMIU as the program eyes a new era of excellence in the Lone Star Conference (LSC).

Coach Fowler comes to TAMIU following a successful tenure at Lyon College, where he led the team through a challenging transition from NAIA to NCAA Division III. During his three seasons there, Fowler’s teams shattered eight conference records and earned a USCAA National Runner-Up finish. His prior stops include Arlington Baptist University, where he led the Patriots to an NCCAA National Runner-Up finish, and Mission University, where he launched the women’s intercollegiate basketball program. Before his coaching career, Fowler served eight years in the United States Navy with Naval Special Warfare and holds three Guinness World Records for NBA 3-point shooting.

Known for his relentless, high-pressure style of play, Coach Fowler emphasizes a full-court man-to-man defense and a motion offense rooted in team play and transition scoring. “We play 40 minutes of pressure defense, and we want to be known for being relentless,” Fowler said. “We teach players to play the game, not just memorize plays. That takes a special kind of athlete—one with heart, grit, and a team-first mentality. We’re going to find those players here in Texas and abroad.” His recruiting philosophy focuses on character, effort, and fit—prioritizing players who bring heart, positivity, and resilience to the program.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Coach Fowler to the Dustdevil family,” said Director of Athletics Griz Zimmermann. “His passion, energy, and commitment to building a winning culture both on and off the court were evident throughout the hiring process. Coach Fowler brings a unique blend of elite-level coaching experience, military leadership, and a relentless drive to develop student-athletes as players and people. We believe he is the perfect fit to lead our women’s basketball program into a new era of success.”

Beyond X’s and O’s, Fowler brings a strong commitment to holistic development. “Practice is for the team, but development is personal,” he explained. “We tailor individual sessions to each athlete’s needs—on the court, in the classroom, and in life.” Drawing from his military experience, Fowler believes in instilling life lessons through basketball, preparing student-athletes for lasting success well beyond graduation. His wife Cassie and sons Camden (6) and Cohen (3) are also integral to the program’s family atmosphere, often opening their home for team gatherings and events.

Coach Fowler’s vision for the Dustdevils is clear: “Our short-term goal is to qualify for the LSC Tournament, and the long-term goal is to become the first TAMIU women’s team to reach the NCAA Tournament,” he said. “This is a multi-bid league, and with the resources at TAMIU, those goals are absolutely within reach.” He added, “I would like to thank Griz Zimmermann, the search committee, and the administration for giving me this opportunity. I am very grateful and am excited to get to work!”
A press conference will be scheduled at a further date.
