Florida Atlantic adds Lowery to Women’s Basketball Staff

Florida Atlantic women’s basketball head coach Jennifer Sullivan announced the addition of David Lowery as the program’s new assistant coach on Friday.

“I am thrilled to add David to our staff. He brings numerous years of assistant and head coaching experience with multiple stops in the state of Florida,” Sullivan said.

Lowery arrives in Boca Raton with over two decades of coaching experience at the Division I and NJCAA levels, including 16 years working and recruiting in the Sunshine State.

“If you are involved in collegiate women’s basketball, you know the name David Lowery,” expressed Sullivan. “His connections across the country will make an immediate recruiting impact for our program.”

Lowery joins the Owls after serving the past two years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Mercer University. With the Bears, Lowery helped lead Mercer to a 35-23 record over his two seasons in Macon, including an impressive 23-7 mark during the 2021-22 season that saw the Bears capture the SoCon Tournament Championship and earn their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance over a six-season span. Lowery helped to recruit and coach 2022-23 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Summah Evans and worked with 2021-22 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Shannon Titus. He also helped coach two-time First Team All-SoCon honoree Amoria Neal-Tysor, Second Team All- SoCon honoree Jaron Dougherty, Third Team All-SoCon honoree Erin Gonzalez, and SoCon All-Freshman Team members Nigeria Harkless and Enjulina Gonzalez with the Bears.

“During the search process, it was important for me to identify someone that would push myself, our coaching staff, and our team to be better every day, and I know David will provide that,” expressed Sullivan.

Prior to his stint with the Bears, Lowery served as an assistant coach at Northwest Florida State College helping lead the Raiders to a NJCAA national title and producing an incredible 24-2 record in 2020-21. After joining the NFSC staff in January, Lowery worked with the NJCAA Coach of the Year, Bart Walker, and coached Chanaya Pinto to NJCAA All-America honors. Pinto also earned World Exposure Report Sophomore of the Year honors, in addition to being named a first team All-American by the organization alongside teammate Last-Tear Poa, who was named a third team All-American.

Before joining NFSC, Lowery served as the head coach at Florida State College at Jacksonville during the 2019-20 season. Prior to joining the BlueWave, Lowery served as the associate head coach for four seasons at the University of North Florida. While at UNF, Lowery helped lead the Ospreys to back-to-back ASUN Conference semifinal appearances, in addition to recruiting three ASUN Conference Newcomers of the Year and two ASUN All-Freshman Team members.

Lowery arrived in Jacksonville after spending eight years as an assistant coach at Florida. He coordinated the Gators’ recruiting efforts and assisted with player development. Lowery brought 10 ESPN Top 100 recruits to Florida, including McDonald’s All-American Ronni Williams.

During his time with the Gators, Lowery helped lead UF to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2009, 2012, 2014) and four WNIT appearances (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013) with the Gators reaching the WNIT Fab Four in 2013, in addition to coaching 21 all-conference selections and six All-SEC Freshman Team honorees with the Gators.

Prior to joining UF, Lowery served as an assistant coach at Charlotte from 2005-07. During his two seasons in Charlotte, Lowery helped lead the 49ers to a 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship and back-to-back trips to the 2006 and 2007 WNITs.

Lowery began his coaching career at Davidson, serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Wildcats, while also overseeing the team’s academic progress.

“Last but most importantly, David is a terrific person,” expressed Sullivan. “He is a relationship builder and will serve as a tremendous role model for our players and make an immediate impact in our FAU community. I cannot wait for David’s arrival to campus to get to work on our consistent pursuit for a championship.”
