Flagler College hires assistant women’s basketball coach

Flagler College head women’s basketball coach Erika Lang-Montgomery announced this afternoon that Amber Howell has been hired as an assistant coach. She started on May 29.

“I am excited to welcome Amber to our Flagler family,” said Lang-Montgomery. “I witnessed her transition from player to coach while she was at Armstrong. She has always demonstrated a tremendous work ethic. I know Amber will work hard for us and will be a great mentor and role model for our team.”

Howell joins the Flagler staff after spending the past season at Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers in the same capacity for Suncoast Conference Coach of the Year Kristie Ward. The Buccaneers posted a 26-6 record last year and won the conference with an 8-1 record. They advanced to the FSCAA/NJCAA District 8 Tournament semifinals. Six players moved on to four-year schools off this past year’s club, including two who have gone on to NCAA Division I programs. Four players earned all-conference honors along with the league’s player of the year.

“I am truly thankful to Coach Erika and Director of Athletics Jud Damon for the opportunity here at Flagler College,” said Howell. “I am beyond grateful to be a part of the Saints family and to have the opportunity to work and learn under Erika Lang-Montgomery. This is a great college with great core beliefs and values. I am invested in Erika’s vision to grow and develop these young ladies on and off of the court.”

Prior to her time at FSW, Howell spent two seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater Armstrong State University. She spent the 2015-16 season as a graduate assistant for head coach Fala Bullock before being elevated to full-time assistant for the 2016-17 campaign. Howell was part of the 75-member Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s “So You Want to be a Coach” class in 2016. She participated in a three-day workshop held in conjunction with the WBCA Convention.

Howell was a forward for two seasons (2013-15) at Armstrong. She helped lead the Pirates to a 34-22 overall record, including a 21-8 mark in 2013-14 where they won the Peach Belt Conference’s East Division title. Howell averaged 7.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. The Athens, Georgia native played two seasons for Central Georgia Technical College in Macon for Bullock.

Howell graduated from Armstrong in 2015 with a bachelor’s in liberal arts and earned her master’s degree in professional communication and leadership in 2017 from Armstrong.
