Dragon Standout Thorson Joins Minnesota State University Moorhead Women’s Basketball Staff

A familiar face has joined the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball coaching staff. Cassidy Thorson, who played at MSUM from 2014-18, has joined the Dragon staff as an assistant coach.

A West Fargo, N.D., native, Thorson wrapped up a stellar Dragon career this past March. She helped the Dragon women to back-to-back Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships and to two straight trips to the NCAA tournament.

“I’m looking forward to Cass joining our staff — it’s been the plan over the past two years,” Nelson said. “Cass has a passion and eye for the game of basketball, those intangibles will benefit her as she goes headfirst into coaching.  I’m really excited that Cass already understands the work ethic our staff and players have and she understands our expectations.  I look forward to watching Cass develop her our style and what’s she’s bringing to the table!”

Thorson is MSUM’s all-time leader in three-pointers made with 225. She is the only Dragon to surpass 200 threes for her career.  She also is one of 23 Dragon women’s players to surpass 1,000 points for her career; she finished with 1,043.

“Basketball has always been a big part of my life,” Thorson said. “Getting to play college basketball as a Dragon for the last four years solidified the fact that I want to continue to have basketball in my life. I am so thankful that Coach Nelson and MSUM have given me the opportunity to work as an assistant coach for the MSUM women’s basketball team. I will now be able to share my basketball skills, knowledge, and love for this game with future players. I am so excited to get started!”

Thorson was a two-time All-NSIC Second Team selection and a three-time NSIC All-Academic selection as well.
