Dario Firas Named Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Cal State San Marcos

Cal State San Marcos head women’s basketball coach Renee Jimenez announced Dario Frias as her new assistant coach. Frias replaces Jimenez’s longtime assistant Tina Samaniego.

Frias had spent the previous three seasons as an assistant at Cal State San Bernardino, where he was on staff with Jimenez and Samaniego from 2013-15.

“We’re excited to welcome Dario to our Cougar Family, he is a tremendous addition to our program. He is a tireless recruiter and has the drive and work ethic that are so important to a championship program. He has a great ability to develop relationships with our recruits, our players and their families,” said Jimenez. “Dario has a firm understanding of the culture of our program and what it will take to move us in the right direction. I’m excited for our players to get to know Coach Dario and he’ll contribute a great deal to them being the best people they can be.”

At CSUSB, Frias served as the director for camps and clinics, in addition to providing support for individual player and skill development. He coordinated all prospective student-athlete visits, organized team travel, monitored academic progress and developed marketing and recruiting plans to increase the Coyote fan base. Frias helped CSUSB to back-to-back appearances in the CCAA Championship semifinals.

“I am extremely excited and honored to be joining the CSUSM family. I would like to thank Coach Jimenez for this opportunity. I look forward to being able to reconnect with Coach Jimenez and to continue to build on the championship culture here at CSUSM,” said Frias. “I am elated to be working with high character student-athletes, while helping to mentor them into becoming the best players and people they can be. It’s an exciting time to be a Cougar!”

He spent the 2012-13 season as an assistant at NCAA Division III La Verne. The Leopards ranked second nationally in scoring and 3-poitners made per game.

Between 2006-12, Frias was the varsity head coach at Jurupa Valley High School in Mira Loma. He went 112-64 in six seasons, including five 19-win seasons. He reached the CIF quarterfinals in 2009-10, reached the CIF Second Round four times, and helped 14 players move forward to the collegiate level.

While coaching at Jurupa Valley, Frias coached in the West Coast Premier Basketball Academy, one of the top travel ball teams in the nation from 2008-12.
