Cornell University Adds Assistant

Dayna Smith, the Rebecca Quinn Morgan ’60 Head Coach of Women’s Basketball, has announced that Todd Goclowski has joined her staff for the 2014-15 season. Goclowski brings 15 years of experience as both an assistant and head coach, and will be tasked with working with the Big Red’s forwards.

"I am very excited to have Todd join our program," said Smith. "He has a tremendous amount of experience in the profession and is a proven winner at all levels. His basketball knowledge will go a long way in helping to develop our young team. "

Goclowski comes to East Hill after eight seasons as the head coach at DIII power Lebanon Valley. During his eight-year tenure with the Dutchmen, he amassed a record of 171-55 (.757), with six 20-win seasons. He led LVC to three Commonwealth Conference championships, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first five times in program history and making seven appearances in the Commonwealth Conference title game. His 2010-11 squad advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight, followed by a trip to the Sweet Sixteen the next season.

A three-time Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year, Goclowski was also named the Regional Coach of the Year in consecutive seasons (2009-10; 2010-11) and kept the Dutchman ranked in the USA Today-ESPN poll for five consecutive seasons. He also recruited and coached two Commonwealth Players of the Year, two Rookies of the Year, and saw 15 of his players earn All-Commonwealth honors, while 24 were named to the all-academic squad.

The most successful coach in LVC women’s basketball history, Goclowski took over a team that went 7-18 in 2005-06 and made an immediate impact, doubling the team’s conference wins in his first season and keeping the Dutchman in contention for a conference playoff berth until the final day of the season.

In just his second season with LVC, Goclowski turned a young team with four freshmen starters into a contender, advancing to the Commonwealth Conference title game, where it narrowly lost to eventual national runner-up Messiah. The Dutchmen finished the 2006-07 season with a 24-6 record to become the most improved team in NCAA Division III history after going 7-17 the previous year.

In 2009-10, LVC received its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth and the following season began the team’s run of three consecutive Commonwealth Conference Championships.

Goclowski came to Lebanon Valley from Division I Northeastern University, where he served an assistant coach in the 2005-06 season after serving as an assistant at Division III Brandeis University from 2003-05. He helped the Judges establish themselves as the top defensive team in the University Athletic Association, as they led the conference in scoring defense during both of his seasons on the bench.

In the 2004-05 season, Goclowski was part of the Brandeis coaching staff that earned UAA Coaching Staff of the Year recognition after the Judges finished 23-4 – the team’s best season in school history – while capturing an ECAC championship. Brandeis was ranked as high as No. 3 nationally that season. He also helped coach the Judges to an ECAC championship and a No. 18 national ranking in the 2003-04 campaign, when Brandeis finished 22-5. Those two seasons produced more wins than any two-year period in the program’s history.

Goclowski’s first head coaching stint came at DIII Curry College, where he took over a struggling program in 2001-02 and turned it around immediately. He directed the Colonels to a Commonwealth Coast Conference playoff appearance, and with a 17-9 record, they finished as the fourth-most improved team in Division III.

The 2002-03 season at Curry was even more successful, as the Colonels finished 22-4 and set a single-season school record for victories while finishing ninth in Division III in scoring defense. Goclowski was honored as the CCC 2002-03 Coach of the Year, and he was a New England Women’s Basketball Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year nominee in both of his seasons at Curry.

Goclowski also helped create immediate success during his one-year stint as an assistant coach at MIT during the 2000-01 season. That year, the Engineers were the second-most improved team in Division III, finishing 18-8 and advancing to the ECAC playoffs. Before joining the MIT women’s basketball coaching staff, he was an assistant for the MIT’s men’s team in the 1999-2000 season.

A 1990 graduate of Clark University, Goclowski earned a bachelor of arts degree in government and American politics.
