Chase named assistant at HBU

Houston Baptist head women’s basketball coach Donna Finnie has announced the hiring of Ben Chase as assistant coach. Chase spent the previous two years as director of basketball operations for the HBU men’s program.

“I’m delighted to have Ben join our staff,” says Finnie. “When we talked about the missing piece, Ben was that perfect fit. He’s someone very highly thought of around our campus, has an amazing work ethic, and brings an enthusiasm and passion for the game that is so refreshing. Ben will have a focus defensively for us and will work with the guards. He is someone who knows this school and our program inside out and I know he will be an outstanding representative of HBU women’s basketball.”

"I am very excited about the opportunity to work with the women’s basketball team and to help Coach Finnie develop her program,” says Chase. “I have been so fortunate to have had the chance to work here at HBU for the past two seasons. I really enjoyed getting to work with such a high-character group of student-athletes and a staff of coaches that I have a great deal of respect for. I learned a lot from Coach [Ron] Cottrell and his assistant coaches that I hope to bring with me to the women’s team. I couldn’t be happier that I get to continue working here at HBU, and am really looking forward to the upcoming season."

With the men’s basketball program, Chase was primarily responsible for much of the Huskies’ video duties, which aided the staff in advance scouting, as well as coordinating team travel, academic monitoring, and game and practice statistical analysis.

Chase, a Newburyport, Mass., native, came to Houston from Boston, where he was the assistant coach for the Emerson University men’s and women’s basketball teams from 2008-10, then served as the graduate assistant at Boston University in 2011. He helped the Terriers win the America East Conference title and reach the NCAA Tournament. He earned his master’s degree in physical education, health and coaching from BU in 2011 and his bachelor’s degree in video production and marketing from Emerson in 2008.
