Scott Carlson, who has over 30 years of high school basketball coaching experience, has been hired as an assistant coach with the women’s program at Rocky Mountain College.

Rocky head coach Wes Keller announced the hiring on Thursday.

"I’m excited to have a guy on the bench with a lot of game experience," Keller said. "He will bring a lot of new ideas and things to practice and games. He’s kind of a basketball junkie. "

The 57-year-old Carlson, who is a 1979 graduate of Rocky and former Battlin’ Bear athlete, will remain as a social studies teacher at Billings West. He has around 35 years of teaching experience, with stops at West, Billings Skyview and Simms.

During his 31 years of coaching, Carlson has directed the boys and girls teams at Simms and the girls team at Skyview. He won a state Class B title with the girls at Simms.

As a boys tennis coach at West, he guided two state Class AA championship teams. He was also part of two state title boys basketball teams at West as a member of head coach Doug Robison’s coaching staff.

During Carlson’s stint as a junior varsity coach at West, the Golden Bears won 104 consecutive games during a five-year stretch.

"I’m just really excited about helping him," Carlson said of Keller. "He’s really motivated, and is an excellent coach."

Rocky’s staff will also include Torry Hill, who was recently hired after wrapping up her collegiate playing career at the University of Montana.
