The University of Dallas announced Thursday that Lacey Burns has been named the 15th head coach of the women’s basketball program. She replaces Greta Grothe, who accepted a position at Southwestern University in June.
Burns arrives at Dallas after spending the past year as the head coach at NCAA Division II Concordia University Irvine. She guided the Eagles to a 10-16 record and 8-12 mark in the PacWest Conference. The team’s performance improved from 2-23 the season prior before Burn’s arrival. In the classroom, the team increased its grade point average from 2.5 to 3.1 during Burn’s tenure.
Before that year, Burns served as the assistant women’s basketball coach at NCAA Division I Pepperdine University. Burns was the Waves Defensive Coordinator and was the academic liaison between the head coach and academic advisor. She was responsible for study hall and performed other duties with the school that included coordinating summer camps and elite clinics.
For four years, Burns garnered several years of success at helm with San Clemente High School in San Clemente, California. Headlined by three consecutive league championships, Burns accomplished a 70-34 overall record. She improved them in the league standings from 4-4 to a combined 23-1 mark over the next three seasons. Highlighting this trio of years was consecutive unblemished eight-win marks the first two.
Burns also made stops as the head coach at St. Katherine College (2014-15) and was the assistant coach at Vanguard University of Southern California (2010-11) and California State Polytechnic University of Pomona (2009-10). She coached for seven years (2009-15) as a head coach with Cal Swish Basketball Club 15U and 17U.
Burns received her Master’s of Arts in Coaching & Athletic Administration in August 2013 from Concordia University. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at Vanguard University of Southern California in May 2007.
Burns played for her undergrad alma mater from 2003 to 2007. She competed in two Elite 8 national tournament appearances and two Final 4 showings. The team amassed a 110-9 record while she played. In 2009 and 2011, she organized a missions team to travel to the Philippines to compete against the local colleges and universities.
Burns inherits a team that went 11-15, and tied a school record six-game winning streak that propelled UD to an 8-3 non-conference mark. The Crusaders were eliminated 58-54 in the first round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament by Austin College. The Crusaders return rising senior Michelle DeCoud (Monument, Colo.), who earned spots on the SCAC All-Conference and United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American Teams consecutive years. She ranked in the top five in scoring average (15.3), rebounding average (10.3) and field goal percentage (50.6) in the SCAC most the campaign.
