Virginia Tech women’s basketball head coach Kenny Brooks announces the addition of Shawn Poppie to his staff as assistant coach.
“I am very excited about the addition of Shawn Poppie to our coaching staff,” Brooks said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our staff and I think the chemistry he has shown with our staff will help to make for a smooth transition.”
Poppie comes to Virginia Tech after serving at Furman for the past three seasons, most recently in the role of associate head coach. During his time, he helped the Paladins to a pair of trips to the postseason. This past year the Paladins advanced to the semifinals of the SoCon tournament before falling to co-champion Mercer.
“I am beyond excited to be joining Hokie Nation with Coach Brooks and the women’s basketball program,” Poppie said. “Coach Brooks has a great reputation in this business for developing and producing great teams and more importantly great people. I look forward to the opportunity of working along side such a great staff who have a strong passion and commitment to Virginia Tech.”
Prior to his stint at Furman, Poppie spent two seasons at USC Upstate.
Poppie began his career as an assistant coach at Limestone College where he served as recruiting coordinator. During his tenure, he recruited and signed three all-conference performers and helped the Saints to a 25-7 record, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Tournament in 2012.
A 2007 graduate of Limestone, Poppie was a two-time Carolinas-Virginia Athletic All-Conference player. He graduated as the school’s all-time leader in assists (602) and steals (168) and finished third on the scoring list (1,246). Poppie earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management.
