Boston College Women’s Basketball Staff Update

Boston College women’s basketball is excited to announce the addition of Chrissy Roberts and Avery LaBarbera to the coaching staff. Roberts is the new director of player development while LaBarber will serve as the graduate assistant.

Through her years of experience at the collegiate level, Coach Rob understands that winning on the court is not just about tactics and strategy; it’s about investing in the potential of each player, pushing them to their limits, and helping them blossom into the best versions of themselves. Together, we will forge a path of excellence, where the growth of our players becomes the cornerstone of our success.”

Roberts arrives at the Heights after serving a one-year stint at Lindenwood as an assistant coach. Prior to Lindenwood, she was on the UIndy sidelines for two seasons, specializing in defensive operations and scouting. 

Roberts was the head coach at EKU for 11 seasons from 2008-18, leading the Colonels to a pair of OVC Tournament Championship appearances. 

Roberts began her coaching career back in 1999 at Tennessee Technology University as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. Roberts then went on to become the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at EKU until 2002 before moving into the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach role at East Carolina University all the way through 2008.

As a player, Roberts was the 1998 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and a nominee for the 1998 NCAA Woman of the Year. She was also inducted into both the DAWAHARES/KHSAA Hall of Fame in 2020 and the Eastern Kentucky Hall of Fame in 2007 for her outstanding athletic achievements.

Roberts received two degrees during her time at Eastern Kentucky- her master of science in sports administration in 1999 and bachelor of science in sports supervision in 1998.”I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to join the Boston College women’s basketball family,” said Roberts. “I am looking forward to working with and learning from Coach Mac, who is an unbelievable person and coach, and the entire staff! Something is special on the horizon and can’t wait to be a part of it.”

LaBarbera is coming off a stellar collegiate career, scoring over 1,500 points and grabbing over 700 rebounds with the Crusaders and Badgers. 

“Embracing the power of knowledge and fresh perspectives, we welcome Avery LaBarbera as our new basketball graduate assistant coach to our team,” said head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee. Her vibrant energy and insights will allow her to act as a bridge between the players and our coaching staff. Avery has a hunger to learn and is dedicated to honing her craft. Her pursuit of excellence, as seen in her standout career at both Holy Cross and Wisconsin, will undoubtedly make a positive impact on our players’ growth and development. She will prove to be a rising star in the coaching profession.”

In her one season with the Badgers, LaBarbera averaged 11 points per game, while appearing in 30 games. She was fifth in the Big Ten averaging 34.7 minutes per game and led the team shooting 37.9 percent from beyond the arc. 

She enjoyed a successful four-year career with Holy Cross, as she was a  four-time All-Patriot League selection, highlighted by a 2021-22 Patriot League Player of the Year award. She ended her stint with HC with 1,478 points and 600 rebounds, and finished third all-time in 3-pointers made, sixth in minutes played, seventh in scoring average double-doubles, field goal attempts and 13th all-time in scoring. “I am extremely grateful to begin this new chapter at Boston College as a graduate assistant,” said LaBarbera. “I am thrilled to have received the opportunity to learn from Coach Mac and her staff. I’m excited to be a part of building something special here at BC!”
