Hawai’i women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman has finalized her coaching staff with the additions of assistant to the head coach Calamity McEntire and assistant coach Brad Langston.
McEntire will serve as the team’s recruiting coordinator, manage Hawai’i’s scheduling and contribute to on-court coaching, scouting, and more. She comes to Hawai’i from the University of Arizona where she was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Wildcats from 2012-16. In 2014 McEntire helped assemble a top-25 recruiting class for Arizona, the highest rated class in program history. She also coached the team’s guards, including the Davellyn Whyte, who became the 16th pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft.
Prior to her time at Arizona, McEntire served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Boise State University from 2008-12, director of women’s basketball operations at UC Santa Barbara from 2006-08, assistant coach at Fresno State from 2004-06, and manager at Tennessee from 2001-03. McEntire played two seasons at Eastern Oklahoma State from 1999-2001 before earning her Bachelor’s degree from Tennessee in sport management in 2003.
“Calamity McEntire joins our staff after 12 tremendous years in the Division I ranks,” Beeman said. “She will bring much needed experience and knowledge to our program at just the right time. The overall draw to Calamity was her tireless work ethic, her bubbly personality and her commitment to the development of our players. She has already embraced the spirit of aloha and her impact has been felt throughout our program.”
Langston makes the jump to the college ranks after spending the previous eight seasons developing high school and youth players. His responsibilities at Hawai’i will include player development, on-court coaching, scouting and offensive and defensive strategies.
Langston was previously the assistant varsity girls basketball coach at West Campus High School in Sacramento, Calif., from 2011-16 and helped the team win five consecutive league titles and reach the state tournament three times. He helped develop two players in the ESPNW Top 100 at WCHS and also founded the Evolution Skills Academy where he developed several players who went on to play collegiately.
“Brad Langston is joining the Division I coaching ranks for the first time,” Beeman said. “His charismatic and warm personality made him an immediate fit into our ‘ohana. Brad’s strength in player development could not come at a better time for us. With our young roster, his ability to teach, motivate and develop players is immeasurable not only on, but off the court as well.”
