Barrios joins Nicholls Women’s Basketball coaching staff

Nicholls State University head women’s basketball coach DoBee Plaisance announced Wednesday the addition of former Colonel standout Cassidy Barrios to the coaching staff. Barrios will serve as a full-time assistant coach.

Barrios graduated from Nicholls in 2019 as the program’s all-time leading scorer. Following a brief professional stint overseas, she returned to Thibodaux to serve as director of basketball operations under Plaisance for the 2019-20 campaign.

“What Cassidy has done for this program up to this point is immeasurable and with her now being a part of our staff, I believe it makes a statement about not only the direction of the program but the commitment we have to our players and the University,” Coach Plaisance said. “Our program is about family, it’s about Nicholls and making a difference. Cassidy has done that and I know she will continue her tradition as a member of our staff.”

As a player, Barrios led Nicholls to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history after the Colonels won the Southland Conference Tournament in 2018. She was named MVP of the SLC Tourney in addition to earning Southland Player of the Year and Southland Student-Athlete of the Year.

A native of Raceland, Louisiana, Barrios also made history that season by being named Louisiana Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. She was the first outright winner since 1986 to not play for either LSU or Louisiana Tech. Barrios went on to win the award again as a senior, becoming the first player since Plaisance’s daughter, Theresa, to be recognized as POY in back-to-back seasons.

Barrios helped Nicholls to its first 20-win season in program history in 2018-19 and an appearance in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. She repeated as the SLC’s top student-athlete and received her third All-Southland honor. Barrios also became the first player in team history to earn first-team twice in their career.

Barrios averaged 16.1 points in 124 games for the Colonels and finished with 1,993 career points. She is also the program leader in blocks and free throw percentage, and ranks second in rebounds, steals, and 3-point percentage. She finished third all-time in assists and racked up 44 double-doubles for her career.
