Garfield replaces Melinda Bendall who retired from coaching in April after six years with the Cougar program. BYU recorded six-straight 20-plus win seasons, won two West Coast Conference Championships, one regular WCC season title and made six-straight postseason appearances during Bendall’s tenure.

“I’m excited to have Ashley join our coaching staff,” Judkins said. “She was a great player for us, understands the game of basketball and knows the system we run. She was one of the hardest working players I’ve coached and worked just as hard being our director of basketball operations. She’s going to be a great coach and great asset to our program.”

Garfield was a four-year letterwinner for BYU from 2011 to 2015. During her career, she was a four-time West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Gold Honor Roll recipient and a three-time WCC All-Academic honoree. As a senior in 2014-15, she was selected as a team co-captain.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity coach Judkins has given me and am excited to continue to be part of the BYU program,” Garfield said. “BYU has given me so many opportunities and now I can give back to the school and help continue to take the program in the right direction and to compete at the highest levels.”

Garfield finished her Cougar career with 424 points, 520 rebounds and 152 assists. As a junior, she ranked third on the team in rebounds with a 6.3 average and was second in that same category her senior season with a 7.5 average before suffering a season-ending ACL injury.

During her BYU career, the Cougars won two WCC tournament championships and participated in four postseason appearances, advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2014 and to the third round of the WNIT in 2013. In each of her four seasons, BYU recorded 20-plus wins including a school-record 28 wins in 2014.

Garfield graduated from BYU in 2015 with a degree in health education. She prepped at Morgan High School where she was a tri-sport athlete in basketball, volleyball and track & field. In basketball, she was a two-time region MVP, three-time Deseret News First Team All-State, a three-time Salt Lake Tribune First Team All-State and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee in 2011. In volleyball, she garnered two 3A state MVP honors, and was named the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year in 2010.  At the 2011 Utah track & field championships, she finished third in the state in the javelin, sixth in the long jump and in the 200m dash and placed eighth in the 400m dash.

During the off-season, Garfield played club basketball with Salt Lake Metro and later served as an assistant coach on the team.
