Alaska Fairbanks opens national search for Women’s Basketball Head Coach

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Athletics has opened a national search to permanently fill the position of head coach for the women’s basketball team. The Alaska Nanooks are committed to the process of finding the possible candidate for the women’s basketball team, its student-athletes, Alumni, boosters and fans.

Following the resignation of former Alaska Nanooks women’s basketball head coach Cody Bench last spring, assistant coach Brett Sawyer was appointed the role of Interim Head Coach shortly afterward.

Since taking over the program last March, Sawyer led the 2017-18 Nanooks to a 4-22 overall mark on the season and a 0-22 record in conference play. Despite going winless in league games, Alaska still produced a program-best six selections to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, while sophomore guard Lexi Carpenter was named an All-GNAC Honorable Mention.

The Alaska Nanooks women’s basketball team is one of five NCAA Division II programs at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, while four others (men’s and women’s Nordic ski, swimming, coed rifle) compete on a multi-divisional basis, while men’s ice hockey is the only NCAA Division I program at UAF.

After falling 89-66 at Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, Feb. 24, the Alaska Nanooks women’s basketball team saw the 2017-18 season come to an end.
