Georgia Southwestern State University Director of Athletics Mike Leeder announced that head women’s basketball coach Missy Tiber has resigned her position after two seasons to accept an opportunity closer to home.
Tiber guided the Lady Hurricanes to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship game during her first season in Americus and helped continue the program’s tradition of excellence on the court and in the classroom. Under her leadership, three student-athletes garnered All-Peach Belt Conference recognition, while three Lady Hurricanes were selected to the Peach Belt Conference Women’s Basketball All-Academic Team.
“We are grateful for Coach Tiber’s leadership and service to Georgia Southwestern over the past two years,” said Leeder. “Missy brought a wealth of experience, passion and professionalism to our women’s basketball program. She invested in our student-athletes and represented our university with class. While we are disappointed to see her leave, we understand and support her decision to pursue an opportunity that allows her to return home and be closer to family. We wish Missy and her family nothing but success and happiness in this next chapter.”
Tiber is departing a coaching career that spanned three decades and multiple levels of collegiate basketball to return to her hometown in Ohio, where she will serve as Athletic Director for Bellaire Local Schools.
“I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Georgia Southwestern State University for the opportunity to serve as the head coach of the women’s basketball program for the past two years,” Tiber said. “I am especially thankful to Mike Leeder and President (Dr. Michelle) Johnston for their leadership, support and belief in me throughout this journey.
“The GSW campus community and the Americus community welcomed my family with open arms from day one. Your kindness, encouragement, and support made this experience truly special.
“While this next chapter brings an exciting opportunity to return home and be closer to family, I will always cherish the relationships, memories and experiences we shared at GSW. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the Hurricane family. I wish the university, the athletic department and the women’s basketball program continued success in the years ahead.”
A national search for the next head coach of the Georgia Southwestern women’s basketball program will begin immediately.
